Progressive springs Roadking

    Hi Guys,

A few weeks ago I remove my forks to replace the oil.

It was filthy maybe not changed for a while, maybe why the ride was a bit shitty.

Anyway I decided I would upgrade to Progressive springs (progressive Spings), they arrived today after a 2 week journey acroos Oz, thanks to Oz Post.

They look and feel a bit different to stock springs and shorter.

They come with spacers to make up for shortness, but going through the paperwork, seems some confusion re spacer length.....1.25",1.75" and 1.87".

Has any  fitted these upgrades and have any insight into amount of preload required.

Most of my riding is at open road highway speed..

    Cheers

Not sure which ones ya got there two types I think , Gas filled mono tubes which is what I just fitted ,they replace every thing except the locating cups, they come with instructions about the spacers as per your weight & weather you ride two up or solo , Iam guessing you got the drop in spring type. There are also drop in lowering kits as well & image the different lenght spacers determine how hard you want your ride & how heavy you are...the longer the spacer the more compressed the spring, as a guide check the overall lenght of stock springs & go from there..if in doubt (you tube) is great source of information I use it all the time

    Thanks Gidgi,

The one's I got are drop in non lowering.

The instructions are a little vague.

They mention around 3/4" to 1" of preload.

I'll have to go a ponder a little.

    Cheers

Preload is how much you compress down the spacer to install the top cap while the fork is fully extended if thats what you are unsure about.
    If that makes sense

    I think I get it.

The standard spring sticks out of the fork tube by about 40mm and is an entirely different than the progressive spring. I guess the 40mm give the preload.

The progressive springs intructions claims only 3/4" to 1" of preload is required so as the forkcap is around 1' long, I believe I cut the spacer to reach the end of the tube and push the cap in and screw up.

Just coming to terms with the difference between the two.

With regards fluid level, the manual states refilling with 325ml of fork oil  and a measurement of 125mm I guess the 125mm is from the top of the fluid to top of tube cos thats what I have acheived.

Correct me if I'm wrong but the installation instruction states a measurement of 140mm as the new spring displaces more fluid, am i on the right path.

    Still seeking opinions;

Does anyone know what the ride difference would be between 3/4" and 1" preload.

You see I'm a lazy bastard and prefer to do things only once.

    Cheers

    Thanks Hilly,

Yes make a lot of sense to to start at 140mm, these  forks are quite easy to add to if needed.

The guys I got the springs off (EasyR) sent me 1 quart of Spectro Heavy Duty Fork Oil Type E (20wt) apparently quite popular in the USA.

Supposed to exceed all OEM requirements anyway we'll see.

So yesterday got the fluids right installed spring and cut my spacer to 52mm plus washer. I read somewhere I can just add washers to gain more preload.

Amyway when lowered the bike without me on it I guess the sag was around 25mm so with me on it may be around 32mm.

I'll just have to guess that as I'm here on my pat so have no one to measure it for me.

WIll be a suck it and see exercise.

    Cheers
