08 Night Train, Engine noise 1/4 throttle

    G'day All,

I have noticed a strange sound from the left hand side of the engine, its like a scraping/ticking sound, when I'm rolling along then open up to about a 1/4 throttle, it will make the noise for about a second then as the revs get past that point it goes away. It doesn't make the noise if I slowly load the engine through the rev range.

I noticed a week earlier when I was stuck in the CBD on a warn arfternoon, my legs were starting to get hot and the noise started after I got off the clutch and I took off at 1/4 throttle.

    Any help would be great.

    Cheers

    Ryno

I would be thinking Wheel Bearings or Compensator Sprocket.

na I haven't at all, it was serviced at Sy's in sydney about 12months ago. They adjusted the map appaerently but it wasn't done with a dyno. I spoke with a shop and for some reason I believe your dead right Ando. Will a dyno tune sought out pinging?

Comp probably has come loose. it should be more noticeable at idle on the side stand as the comp will be rubbing against the primary case. Easy fix to tighten the nut. Also could be your primary chain slapping on the top of the case. This is due to the chain adjuster not taking up enough slack. There is a fix for that which I don't personally like as it can put extra strain on the crank.

First gear hard accelerate to close to red line then throttle off and hard rear brake without locking up the wheel. Do this a couple of time and it will take up the extra slack in the chain. Or drop the primary case and knock the adjuster up a couple of notches. If you have a long this screw driver you may be able to get in through the clutch cover.

A better fix is to put in an SE compensator setup. Better than stock and a Hayden M6 BT07 Primary chain adjuster. I run both on my 07 softail and it was the best changes I made to the bike.

Would a smart tune help in the meantime? or should I just leave it as is and wait for a tune???

    Just an update.

Took the bike to Fred at Pro Cycle Dyno. Bike runs sweet after he tuned it. So much smoother than before the tune. Power jumped from 77.97HP to 87.96HP. Torque jumped from 105.11 to 112.71. I just wanted the pinging to stop but it now rides unreal. Thanks Drac for the recommendation.
