I recently re-aquainted my self with a new/old bike I bought to have a project to do an old school bobber/Bar hopper. I have a 80ci genie shovel with STD cases. engine is in great order having been built in 2009 and done bugger all miles since. However i have encountered a problem with the Timing gear cover that has spun out the cam bush and the cam cover is shot. Luckily I caught it before any other damage occurred. So I'm trying to find a new cover which is not easy unless I go for a new S&S or Billet style type but I'd rather have an original looking cover. I can Find Pan covers somewhat easy enough on EBAY but not genie shovel covers. I believe they differ in the oiling system to the top end so my question is can I use the Pan ones and make a mod to make it work. Any feedback would be great.
this is a set of gen/shov std cases with an early 4 rib panhead cover ,oil galeries line up and this will run o.k...
best place to start is familarise yourself with a good manual showing the oil passages and compare that with what you want to use/do..
l keep a few around to compare with each other, and have had no issues interchanging covers like panhead,- shovelhead-.std cases.
, in some instances you would need to drill,& tap,
, check that the oil holes line up,...the shot of the 65 cover with the pen pointing to the hole would need to be blocked as it has a small oil galery you would not use in a set of gen shov cases.or std shov cases,,this could be threaded and a plugged,so if you ever wanted to use it on a 65 it would easy to put back to origonal, the oil galeries that feed the pinion and cam shaft inside the covers are fed from a small hole in the right side motor case,l dont have a photo, but you can work it out from your old cover..
there are side pinion oiler's & end type oiler's on the pinion shaft if the pinion shaft has a side oil feed hole for the crank pin big-end bearing feed , you will have to check all feed oil hole from the oil pump into the cover etc , but i think also the main ques would be cam shaft aliginment , the bush in the cam cover needs to be linebored from inside the right hand crank case, new bushes are supplied under sized for this reason, or if you have STD cases & don't want to pull da motor apart i would @least use a STD cam cover because they were prob made with a cnc machine & would not be as far out as a stock early cases could be , da old girls were all made with da same machine's as da WLA's were up untill da EVO's then Harley went modern equipment cnc's , da old machine were all worn out so there is a lot of differance's in one set of case's to another from 42 to 83 models , line boring is important as its only luck if it fit's up good or not , eg look in da factory manual on any Harley thru those years
