Hi Guys,
A mate of mine who is more than conversant with all things shovel gave me a heads up on a barn find a few weeks ago. He came with me to check it out and basically gave it the thumbs up. Matching numbers, which is a biggy for mine. He told me later that if I wasn't going to pull the trigger he had some folding in his back pocket to put a deposit on it.
So I just bought an 81 Superglide Fat Bob in original and reasonable condition. Been sitting in a shed for about 3 yrs, owner started it every 2 or 3 weeks. Gear box was rebuilt a few years ago when he was riding it. Only 41k on the clock, was told original k's. Starts, idles and runs just fine. Rode it home some 15 km with no dramas. Comes with period bags which need tidying up.
Items on the agenda for roadworthy are: rear brakes are grabbing, rear brake light is stuck on and the h/light housing bracket is flopping around. Came with 4 months rego.
Apart from new fluids and plugs I intend on replacing front discs which are scored somewhat, paint job on tank and both guards (some idiot spilled brake fluid on the tank!!), r and r both tyres (rear is 6 yrs old and the frnt is 9 yrs old), then start removing and paint those items that are looking tired, new decals etc.
Here she is:
Thanks for welcome fellas. I do count myself pretty lucky with this old girl.
I didn't mention the selling price before. We went back and forward and I secured it for $5,800, so very happy with that outcome as well.
Thanks again for the welcome guys.
kiwidave: I was thinking the same about the 'Live to Ride' trim. Kick starter won't fit unless I either change the pipes back to original 2 into 1 or maybe extend the shaft to take the k/starter.
Brakes are binding (hoping new seals will fix that) and the rear caliper is broken/missing a section where the locating pin sits. Far from good really, not to mention potentially fkn dangerous, spewin as I missed that when I was checking it out. Was thinking of upgrading to twin pot whilst I'm doing it. I've researched that the original rear brake was useless.
The headlight is faulty (no high beam). Plus the h/light housing is broken at the housing where the bolt secures it. New one ordered stateside.
Have to get on top of essentials for the bloody roadworthy. Joy oh joy.
