G'day forumbusters. On the way home from the national meeting at Moama, we stopped at Yass for rest stop. I noticed a oily burning smell and found that my rear pipe/heat sheild had oil spatter on it that had come out of the air cleaner. It was smoking wildly when i got off but then subsided as it burnt off. I looked at my oil temp guage and it was showing 112 deg c. not too hot.
A couple of things, It is the first time in 3 1/2 years, since the Ultra, was new, that oil has come out of the air cleaner.
I never fill my oil up competely. I always leave it one mark down from full on the dipstick.
It has a H-D ventilator style cleaner, so the air can blow in the front, and exit out the back with little restriction.
I used a different fuel at the previous fill up at Gundadai. It was shell v-power. I ususally get BP ultimate 98 or vortex 98.
So questions are, I wonder if the fuel used (v power) runs hotter than the others and causing oil misting through the breathers. The wind carries the mist through the air cleaner and onto the pipe.
Blocked/clogged/ stuffed breathers allowing too much oil vapour through/out.
It only happened the once and did not do it after the next fuel stop.
I have been on rides that were a lot hotter (days) and didn't happen.
Any thoughts what could have caused it? Fix?
Cheers Hutch.
G'day Hutch, mate if ya had ya bike serviced just prior t the ride,,,,,then,,,,,
they could have overdone it when re oiling the air filter. ( if ya got that type)
It can take a little time for excess oil t drain out, so time frame is right.
Probably cause we talked about it at Moama , and you said yours never did ................... bike musta heard us !!!!
Mine did it from new, vented to air cured it
