Scavenger

Apologies if this has been discussed before.  Read somewhere the Scavenger system is required for a complete Oil change to occur on a twin cam.  Some dirty oil is apparently always left behind when just draining from the plug.  While doing my change recently I was thinkin about this and wondered if I pulled the spark plugs and cranked her over if the oil pump would push more oil out.  I tried it and it did.  Figured with no plugs; no compression or strain on engine or bearings.  I dont know how much more came out and or the value in doing this but when I checked it after filling and starting it was almost too clean to see on the stick.  My question is for you guys that may know the flow direction of the oil system.  Is what I did helpful in doing the same thing the scavenger does and getting any residual oil out??   I did the same thing for about 20 seconds after changing the filter and filling the crankcase back up.  My thinking was that doing this again the oil pump would pull oil into where it should be although not under the load of a running engine.  Was I was protecting bearings and oil filter from a dry fill ??  Was I just wasting time or being too fussy ??  Thanks for input.

What you are doing is pretty much the same as what the Scavenger does. The only difference is you risk your new filter being contaminated with dirty oil. The Scavenger just uses a blank to stop the oil pissing out of the where you put the filter.

I run my bike as I could not be stuffed holding the started down. :) It won't hurt as long as you have plenty of oil in the tank.

    Cheers

Had this discussion on here the other day, don't know why people have no hesitation in spending thousands of dollars on shit that shines but wont buy a $70 scavenger.... Makes me laugh actually...

A question for users. It appears with the puck installed,
You are passing unfiltered oil through the engine ?

Yep - $70 is nothing! I love my scavenger!

You are not passing unfiltered oil really - you are getting the last of the crap oil out of the machine. Once you do it, you will have such clean oil that you will not be able to see it on the stick! LOL!

I have a Scavenger for my Fatty. Its the only way to go. I agree. You spend $25K on ya bike but cant spend $100 to do the oil change properly. I also spent over $4K on the motor, so again $100 is stuff all

Does someone have an Aussie link for a scavenger? They are on EBay but none there for a 2013 Fatboy.

I use a Scavenger on an 2009 Fatboy and got mine from the US as there are no distibutors in Australia. The Scavenger should be no different to the one I have even if yours is a 2013 model.

If you change your oil regularly which most of us do I don't understand why you would feel the need to get every last drop out.
I change my engine oil at roughly 6000k intervals but if it blows out to 8000 or 9000 it doesn't worry me too much.
As for a litre of old oil running through a brand new filter I don't really give a fuck cos the old oil would be good for at least another 3000k
Anyway, that's my excuse for being a lazy bastard

Beagle - Once you try it, you will never go back.

I bet every time you change your oil it's black right? I change mine every 5000km and it's almost as clean as the new oil I put in. My oil is never black in my engine - Never. In fact at 5000kms it's almost impossible to see on the stick.

Black oil is dirty oil carrying shit around your engine. Like so many have said...most of us have spent FARK loads on our bikes, so the little extra for the scavenger, and the extra 10 minutes during the change is well worth it to me.

    what causes the blackness mongrel?
I reckon it must come from the fuel burning and blowing through the rings cos I just changed the 3 oils on my bike last weekend and the tranny and primary oils were as clean as the day they were put in. (15000k ago)
the last time I changed the engine oil was 6000k ago and I didn't change the filter that time and the oil is a lovely shade of brown.
    Easy to read the dipstick.
I understand everyone wants to look after their bikes but I don't understand being anal about it.

    Each to their own mate.

Just remember, your engine has a limited life. There is only a certain number of revolutions in that engine. It's unknown number, but anything to make that number greater, has to be a good thing.

It's the same reason I won't put my bike on a dyno. I have no need that I know of to ring the neck out of my donk for the sake of knowing how many horses are under my arse. I know how many I have - Enough to keep me happy! :)

If your way works - all good man!

On the Rogue Chopper website it does not give an option for sporty after 09. What are guys using for their later model sporties?
I have one for the Fatty and it works a treat.
    Any suggestions?
    Cheers.

My thoughts exactly on both statements above Mongrel.  Im going to look into making one as suggested as well. As far as agreeing with you on the dyno.  I should qualify that by saying my bike only has minor Stage 1 upgrades and understand that if I went for a Stage 2 or 3 upgrades I would probably get it done.  Im a bit older and we always used to get them running right the old fashioned way. Trial & Error.  Was a pain in the ass at times and must say the new shit and EFI nowadays is pretty cool all except for I dont know how to fuck with any of it!  LOL  Maybe Ill ask my 14 year old daughter, she gets all my other Puter shit goin.  :)

Mate, cut an old filter to use as the blank. Clean it thoroughly. Cut the end off a plastic bottle like a Coke bottle etc. Get a piece of tube that fits over the mouth of the bottle. Screw blank onto engine, stick bottle over the blank, Bobs your Uncle.
