Wondering if anyone can recommend a good painter in melb who does flakes and such, I did get a quote of $3k for a tank and tail which floored me a bit (but to be fair I don't know what it costs and I know this guy is one of the best, he costs what he costs and his work is impeccable.. I just don't have that sort of budget :) ).

    Or is $3k about right?

To give you an idea on price, on my last bike (a Softail), I got a pearl silver paintjob with a white flake professionally painted, with custom airbrushing on tank and both fenders for $2k cash. Bloke has gone back home to Los Angeles so no longer here. It was good quality work so $3k (and without airbrush work) is on the more expensive end of things but if it's a legitimate business transaction where tax and overheads are taken into account, it's probably not too bad. But I'm sure you could do better as you and Walka suggested
