I went to start the bike today and all I got was a sound like a rattle gun. Battery has been on  trickle charger and not started for about 4 months. Is it time for a new battery ?

Check battery and terminals on battery and earth and solenoid and starter. It sounds like the battery to me.

it was the battery, after 7 years. Not too shabby. Had the full service while it was there. A minor problem, isn't there always. The 'abs' light remains on. Interesting, seeing I don't have abs.

Any quick solutions or is it a quick trip back to the shop.

Scraping the bottom of my memory bag here, but doesn't the abs light indicate certain fault codes? If so you could pull up the code and see what's what. Chances are they just fogot to reset everything after the service...maybe?
