Bit confused as getting differing opinions from two dealerships on this one...

If i dont go a full exhaust upgrade, just screaming eagle mufflers and a hiflow screaming eagle airfillter do i need to get the tuner ($600) and get the bike remapped to allow for the new air filter?

Been told by one dealership ff you dont remap.. too much air and too lean fuel resulting in potential detonation in cylinders, other dealership said rubbish efi will adjust to suit?

    Anyone know?

    cheers

For peace of mind I'd have it re mapped.

I've just swapped out a rather expensive POS Thundermax tuner off my Softail, & replaced it with a Screaming Eagle.
At the end of the day, to meet emissions of various states in US, most if not all EFI bikes are tuned on the leaner side of ideal AFR's and yes, they do seem to ping a bit.

It's your bike after all, & I'd hate to be grounded at home while your mates are out having fun on their weekend rides, especially since we are getting into more favourable weather now.

I recently rode a 103 with se2 cams and the air intake and I thought it was a slug it had the tune installed but was still misfiring on deceleration and didn't go very hard If i had spent the dough I'd be dissapointed.
It had the orange tuner box so i am guessing it was just a base map installed..

Get the tuner. The dealer will load a map, which will be adequate at best. Then either play around with it yourself by plugging it into a laptop, or better yet, get it dyno'd.

I have an aftermarket 2-1 pipe and RSD air cleaner with the SE tuner. The first 'dealer loaded' map was shithouse, the decal pop was atrocious. I mentioned it when it went in for first service, and the guy told me "okay, we'll the load the map to stop the decel pop" as if they have an off-the-shelf "anti-decel pop" map. Total bollocks. It was improved, but not gone completely. I'll be getting it dyno'd soon, and that'll be it.

Typically the rule of thumb is you can get away without a tune if you just change exhaust but if you change both exhaust and intake components then you will need to tune.

As someone else has mentioned a dealer should be happy to put a suitable map on for you. The couple times I've needed to get it done they've charged me $60 which is 30mins labour.

That rule of thumb has been bandied around as fact for years, its wrong from my point of view, changing the stock air cleaner on a bike won't change much in the afr department, change the mufflers even with a stock air cleaner in place and it's a whole different story, those calibrations that the Harley dealer so proudly flashes in and calls it tuned are just a starting point for a good tune, if you have never ridden a well tuned bike it would be hard to understand just how much difference there is. Spoke to Rick at American Motorcycles in Ringwood - what a great guy - knows his stuff!
And like all the comments on here he was definite about remap with a super tuner and dyno if air filter and mufflers changed - he does his dyno both hot and stone cold.
Really keen to see how it pans out..
