So I'm thinkin of changing from my sportster 48 to a second hand softail slim.

I havnt ridden a softail so I was going to do a test ride at a dealer but I really don't even like going to the dealers.

any one here made the change and if so how did you find it? Any thing I should watch out for when looking at second hand softails?

    Thanks.

I would hire one for a day and go for a few hours (4 or 5) without stopping for very long during the day. That way you will know. Test rides are pretty much useless in the sense that a little ride around the block does not really show how the bike feels if your on it for a few hours in one hit. Renting for a day might cost a bit but a lot less if your unhappy with bike on longer stints.

    Cheers

My first Harley was a fatboy as I always wanted one and liked the looks. The smooth counter balanced engine is another positive (but some don't like this). After riding dynas and a tourer with traditional suspension, they certainly handle ALOT better if that's important to you. The load capacity on the softail is also significantly reduced with their suspension setup if you plan on hauling luggage and/or pillions

Sounds like I definately need to test/hire ride one first. Is the handling really that different to a bike with standard style rear suspension?

Did a ring around and no luck with a demo ride until the new models come out. I've had a look at a few hire places but no slim. May have to wait for the new model.
Will the new model push the second hand prices down much?
