Just thought I would let you all know that I replaced my standard front fork springs with progressive srpings today. All went well and was easy to do. Just some things I was not sure about and had troubles finding answers to, I thought I would put on here. The preload sleaves, I cut down the steel sleeves that came on the bike standard. Did not have to get tube from the hardware. The length i cut them at was 160mm. I used 1.5 litres of oil for the two forks. After I got them back together I noticed that when i pushed down and up on the front forks with the front brake on, it made a knocking noise. After a lot of wondering if I did something wrong I found it was only the break disk. The break disk has movement between the inner disk and the outer. This causes to knocking sound.
Hope this helps with anyone about to do the same job.
Hi LLeroy, It made a lot of difference to mine. The bike feels a lot more stable when riding on rough country roads. The bars do not shake when i hit bumps. Riding over gutters on drive ways is also much more controlable. Overall feel of the bike is much better.
Hi, The spacers that came with the springs did not even reach the top of the fork tubes so they were too short. I had some PVC pipe so I cut it to the length as calculated from the instructions. This was making the forks 10mm too short as compared with the measurement I took before doing the job. I was not happy with using PVC so I cut the original steel spacers 10 mm longer than the PVC test pieces and installed the steel spacers. Worked out well.
