I have an intermittent problem with my 88' FXSTS, it is running the original 1340 EVO with Silver Performance heads fitted and a mild cam, and as far as I can tell original ignition and carby.
The problem I have is that the bike is cutting out, it seems to be electrical to me as there is no cough or splutter before it cuts out, in saying this it did miss and fart the other day, after I'd started it and let it warm up I went to take off and it was missing like a bitch then after about 20secs it came good. This cutting out happens at different times as well, sometimes it happens when I slow down to go around a corner, but the other day it happened while I was cruzin down the road at 100ks, as I said it happens at intermittent times, and usually once it's been running for 10 or 15mins it's fine (except for the other day). When it happens I turn the ignition off and back on and it usually runs ok after that, but not always.
Can anyone give me any ideas regarding what could be causing this?
Any help or information would be greatly appreciated. thanks.
would need to see it , but could possible a wire earthing & causing circut breaker to cut out then come on. if it has stock wiring would not expect that but if it has internal wiring in handle bars could be from there, but just guessing, could be dirt in fuel tank or lot of things. get someone who knows Harleys to check it out.
needs a new dash mounted ign switch , hope ya check da easy styuff 1st
circuit breaker takes quite a few sec's to come back on , check kill wire is not pinch under da switchblock / master cyl
Yeah thanks for that guys, had a quick look at the ignition switch and it looks a little messy under there wiring wise, so will try to clean it up and see if that fixes it.
Does the coil on the EVO's have an overheat cut out or anything like that, or any of the other ignition system bits?
if it was coil or module box it would get worse da longer you ride ,more heat , feel da coil if its hot if it is its fucked
Thanks for the replies guys, have pulled the ign switch out it had a bit of a hatchet job done on it when someone replaced it, so I'll clean up up the mess and see if that fixes it, and if it doesn't I'll check the coil etc as you suggested, thanks again.
Would take it to a Harley Mechanic but I live out in the boonies and the closest one is like 2 1/2 away.
yes replace da switch they stuff up ,
