what fuel do you use for your sportster and why?

     i have a 2015 iron and i've always used 98 premium

but the other day a harley mechanic said to me to use 91 because it runs better on it, in america its all they have.

that doesnt make any sense to me. i understand maybe its made not to run so lean so i tried 95 and didnt notice that much of a difference.

They measure octane rating differently in America. 91 AKI is not 91 RON, in fact it's not even directly comparable, depending on the mix of chemicals in your fuel, 95RON could be 91MON, or 85MON, and AKI is the average of the MON and RON reading. Singapore/NZ 98 (which I presume would be similar to Australian, but don't know) is 93-94AKI, which means 95 would be under 91AKI, and 91 Australian is pretty much flamable dishwater. Americans also fill all their fuel with that dirty ethanol crap, but I wouldn't put it in my Harley.

Short answer: your mechanic doesn't know diddly squat about fuel octane.

I run 98 mate. I have heard using 91 can be better if you're using a tune that was formulated in the States due to the difference in fuel qualities, but I've not been in this situation myself so I can't speak from experience.

my manual says 95 so I normally put that in. I have tried 98 a fair few times and have never noticed any difference. What is the difference between 91 and 95 octane rating dkNigs,? in layman terms would be good. CHEERS

A big +1 dkNigs........ I don't use 91 in anything. I still use 95 in my 4 stroke lawnmower. And really few the few extra cent per tank full in a bike why wouldn't you use the highest rating available??

For the past 10,000km I have used 98 on all but 2 tanks. What I did notice on those two tanks with 91 in them is that the mileage dropped by about 10km to when I had to fill her up. So it seems to me that it uses more 91 for the same mileage. I run 98 to avoid any pinging problems etc.

Not sure if this answers your question but it's the viscosity of the oil. My understanding, using 15w40 as the example, is that 15 is the viscosity of the oil when at a colder temperature (I believe the W stands for winter) and 40 is the viscosity when hot.

Gets confusing when you start comparing engine and gear oils because 20w50 engine oil is the approximate equivalent of 75w90 gear oil and can sometimes be interchangeable.

98 octane will always burn cleaner, so the extra $2 per tank is good insurance.

You will get more miles per gallon using higher octane petrol. So that might be very useful on a small tank. The owners manual says 95 octane or above. 98 contains additives to keep your engine clean so that is a bonus. I Googled it and NRMA said 95 will give 4% better milage and 98 will give 3% better on that for cars.

I use any 98 I can find. I have also ran E85 ethanol for 6 months but was tuned for it. If you are using Harley tunes they'll pretty much run fine on any shit fuel you can find. Having it "properly" dynoed you'd want to use at least what was in the tank when it was done.

Just on 40 years riding Harleys, started out on Super with lead, then they went unleaded still stayed with Super as my valve seats loved it! but was a dirty burning fuel. now since i've looked in my motor that has run BP 98 and if can't get that i put some VP with 95, but after seeing how clean the BP 98 burns i'll stay with it!

and i buy it from top of the hill like Wimbo ( but a different hill)

The question varies according to location and year of bike, I got a 2014 forty eight and I'm qld I found that BP feels better but engine gets used to it so I put 3 tanks of BP one of shell, you will feel the difference, in NSW is the opposite I only use shell, 4 tanks actually then one BP, never caltex even if they pay me. Google all the fuel issues with caltex...
