Fitting bars to the fatboy

Hi all, I have an 07 fatboy with standard bars on it.  I find the bars a little uncomfortable due to the shape of the bars, ie the way they bend at the end.  I am looking at fitting different bars, something along the lines of a T bar or similar to try and change the position of my hands.  Sort of straighten them out a bit.  Anyone else had this issue and if so what did you do? ie what sort of bars.   Also I am fairly handy mechanically and would like to fit whatever bars i decide on myself.  I have read a bit about it and the wiring side of it seems fairly tricky ie pulling the old wires out of the connectors etc.  Anyone else fitted thier own bars and how did it go?

    Thanks

You will be right, as mentioned you need to be patient with the wiring plugs, thats the hardest bit but take ya time and you be ok.

Got a set of inch and a quarter T bars here for sale if ya want em. 8 inch rise. $200

Thanks Chriso that would be great. only thing that worries me is the 8 inch rise, thought it might be a bit high for the bike and Im not all that tall, 5 10 ish in the old scale. Interested though, are you interested in sending them to Geelong if i decide to take them? What bike did you have yours fitted to?

Yeah no worries. I had them on a softy custom. Found em very comfy,, and I'm not a tall bloke either. Also them being thicker was easier to do the internal wiring too.
They have 1 small scratch on em that never bothered me but may bother you, so I'll get you some pics.

Binnsy, the bars you and Chriso are talking about will definitely fix up the wrist/hand position of the original bars. It was one of the first things I did on my fatty. My wrists got sore from the turned in position. Put on some Burleigh bats and all was good. There are some photos in my pics. Good luck mate.

Thanks Bucky15 I had a look and they look kick ass on your fatty. What rise and pull back are the ones you have?

Mate they are 8inch rise. I can't remember the pull back, it'll be on their web site. They are 1 1/2 inch diameter. Sometimes wish I'd gone with thicker 2inch ones. I am also 5'10" and I find the very comfortable. Good luck with it mate. Get a pic up when ur done please. Cheers.

Been measuring etc. and it appears a 6inch rise and 6 inch pull back will suit my short ass on the fatboy. Will settle for a 7 inch rise at the outside. Shame as I like those bars Chriso but they might be a bit high. Looked at some fat bubba bars today, half the prices of HD bars, anyone know much about them. $170 new??

Think that may have what i had on my softail. Quality pretty good though not the easiest to do internal wiring on...now sitting in shed with shrink wrap still inside the bars.
I was thinking 6 inch but ended up getting the 8's and was thankful i did. remember all to allow for the angle of the trees when making your decision.8's were perfect for the FXST

have to say they were comfortable to ride with..(sort of regretting the move to apes but do like the look.)

Binnsy, have you considered keeping your stock handle bars and just changing over to bigger (and pullback) risers? A lot easier, cheaper and more flexibility in adjusting the position of the handlebars in the clamps to get the right position. Can't do that with t bars.

Yeah I did consider that fatbat, I thought that if I put risers on it and they had any pull back at all it would put the bars closer to me, which i dont want and if they were straight i would still be in the same boat but just a bit higher?

Finally sorted the bars out.  Ended up with a set of Burleigh T bars with six inch rise.  Got them 2nd hand from a guy here in Geelong.
Fitted them myself, what a task.  Did it all correctly, ie pulled the connectors apart etc.  No cutting and soldering.  Took my time doing the job, what a mammoth task it was too.  Was lucky enough to have got away with lifting the tank up and back, didnt have to take it right off which was a good thing.
First time I have done a job like this and all went quite well, even the wiring through the bars wasn't too bad.  Used a bit of whipper snipper cord which I fed through the bars and then pulled the wires through.  Relocated the indicators while I was on the go, and pretty happy with that as well, although I will probably get some smaller indicators soon.  The standard ones look a bit big.  Took me three days from go to woe with a few interruptions, and the odd trip or two to the HD dealer here for parts.
The bars far more comfortable than the fatty bars and makes the bike handle completely differently, in a good way.
Thanks for answering all my dumb questions on this thread.
Next question is how do I measure the cable lengths that I will need now.  Brake and clutch are was too long.  Have them tucked up at the moment but they will need to be replaced with shorter ones.
Here are a few pics of the finished product of my toils.

Binnsy those bars look great! The whole bike looks great mate. Those hand grips go well with the overall look too. Are they the Willie G ones?

Nice work with the wiring, you're inspiring me here a bit.

Thanks Hudson76. They are Willie G, got them to match the rear pegs which you cant quite see in the pics. Thanks for the compliment too.
If you are considering doing the bar job on your bike, give it a go. As others have said on this forum just take your time. I have time off work at the moment so buried myself in the shed for three days. The last day was basically re assembling the bike and cleaning up my mess. Probably a two day job really. The electrical connectors are tricky and I did break a couple of the little male terminals. Easily replaced though, no soldering and HD had em in stock.
Im glad I did it myself, was quoted $1800 supply and fit bars from a dealer. Saved a heap of cash and picked up some experience along the way. They are super comfortable too.
