Broken footpeg

Just a quick heads up, was riding with a mate yesterday - he's on a 93' Softail and me on my 94'Fatty, we'd done about 150k's with some spirited riding mixed in and were on our way home and just crawling along with the traffic at about 30km/hr when suddenly my mate who was about 5m in front does this big swerve and I saw something shiny go bouncing off the road and thru the air landing in the median strip. Initially thought old mate had hit a soft drink can, but when we stopped at the traffic lights, he tell's me his right hand footpeg just broke clean off - Fekk me!! No warning (that he noticed anyway) and only shortly before we were going through some nice twisties - would hate to think how that would have played out if he was leaning into right hand corner.

All's good, we turned at the lights and pulled into a carpark and were able to swap a back footpeg to the front so he could ride home safely. There was a small piece of the broken footpeg still in the mount and looking at it, it would appear it has been cracked half way through for some time and has finally fatigued enough to let go fully. We both do our own maintenance, but had never considered checking something like this, so if you've got an older bike - or just old footpegs, it would be worth your while pulling them off and checking for cracks before they break off when you're riding.

    cheers

Something I never do unless I'm replacing them.
Thanks for the heads Up mate.
