I have a 1988 Softail Springer that has been worked a bit. I took it for a run to check out how far I would get on a (5 gallon) tank. I went onto reserve at 304 km's then ran it to empty and got 389 km's. As you can imagine I was pretty happy. Since that test I have added a set of Declaration Turn out pipes and an Andrews EV27 cam and had it dyno tuned. I took it for a run today and only got 184 km's to reserve and 238 km's to empty. Can anybody explain why I'm using so much fuel for so little work. Cheers.
Fuel consumption can vary remarkably. On a recent tour I got 360klm out of a tank and when I fllled up there was 750ml left in the tank.
A day or so later I headed off from one town to another that were 260klm apart (with full tank). There was a petrol station in between that I went past without stopping at, as I knew I could get 360klm from my tank.
I ran out of fuel before reaching the 260klm away town. The reason was a pretty punishing headwind. It was surprising to me how much difference it made.I Guess having a big fat shiela on the back would upset the consumption as well. Either way it seems that mileage between tanks is not constant.
Riding on country roads avering around 100kmp on both runs.
Cheers.
