Poor power output

    G'day fella's,
Haven't been in touch for a while 'cause everything's been OK but now need some advice.
My bike is a 1988 softail Springer (85th anniversary model) with a 1990 1340 motor. Work has been done on it and I have mentioned this before.
Both cylinders have 200PSI which means around 10:1 compression, it has a 42mm Mikuni Flat Slide carby and a free breathing Screaming Eagle Air filter. It also has an Ultima Digital single fire Ignition system with VOES set at 6.0 in/hg. Knowing this I took it in to get it dyno tuned and it came up with just 54HP. The mechanic said the Vance & Hines short shots were killing it and what I needed was a set of Freedom Performance Declaration Turnouts.
So yesterday I had him fit a new set of Turnouts and do another dyno run.
I got 56.47 HP out of it. Now he claims that it must be the cam because it runs real smooth and not like it would if it had a decent cam.
So last week I had an Andrews EV27 cam fitted and another Dyno and it came up with 65.33 HP and 71.67 of Torque. I would have thought that with all the work it would have put out a bit more.  Have added a photo of the bike and of the dyno readout.
    Any suggestions?
    Cheers.

    Hi,

Check ou this setup on Nightrider as its very similiar to what you have:

    http://www.nightrider.com/biketech/hdeds2h0680.htm

    With what you describe above:

    • I recon you have shaved heads or shortened barrels; although my money is on the heads being worked if your really sitting on 10:1 compression as its typically the more common choice of the two.
    • Perhaps its just a set of high comp pistons.  You really need to pop one of the heads off to have a look (the front one is the easier of the two)
    • An EV27 is perhaps too mild for 10:1 (it thrives on a 8.5-9.0:1 engine though)
    • With 10:1 I would be looking at an EV3, EV35 or even an EV46 cam
    • You could tweak the advance and advance curve to make sure they are optimal for your build.
    • Also make 100% sure that your jetting is right.  It needs to be richer for a worked engine.
      • I'm no expert on the HSR40 as I have yet to fit my one, so you will need to research around whats best.
      • The good old CV40 carb will match your HSR42 up to baout 100HP, so you could even go back to one of those.  They are certainly easier to setup if your new to it.
    • Borrow an EV3 from someone and test it out, you will be very surprised at the difference the right cam makes.

So when it went to be tuned did they actually do any tuning in the way of jetting the carb and reprogramming timing curves or was it a case of just bolt shit on and hope for the best.
