Motorcycle bottle jack won't retract!

    Hey guys,

I bought this motorcycle bottle lift/jack couple days ago from gumtree it appeared brand new in the box and went to put it together and now I find that the hydraulic bottle jack won't retract it goes all the way up but won't come back down. Had a bit of a look around and it has the filler plug on it and the release screw valve.

I've tried a couple of things but nothing seems to work.. Any ideas?!

It has been on its side in the box for a while I imagine so it's probably got air on it and doesn't look like it has much fluid as well. I just don't know if I can fill it up with fluid with it extended..

    Here's a photo!

Thanks for any and all the help in advance! - LJ

There should be a Rod that slides along bottom as you raise bike, This is a safety to stop Jack from going down, Have you made sure this is not catching.

Also mine has one foot pedal for pumping up, and another foot pedal to Lower, Might need adjusting

If it is new, it might not retract by itself. some are very hard. Try standing on the top or putting something heavy on top whilst the bleed screw is out and it should go down.
Only need to check fluid level when it is down and that should when jack is upright. The level is right when it is level with the filler plug. Hope this helps. Hutch.

    Yes *cough* new.

Looks like it's an old Prolift bottle jack that's been painted black to look new, it's normallly orange. It's off a repco bike lift.

Press the litte foot lever (the lower one) while someone presses down hard on the top to compress it - a plank and body weight should do it easily. FFS don't piss around with the little screws and oil filler hole unless you know what you're doing. They're not really made to be used as a normal jack.

If you want to sell it cheap send me a PM since I broke mine and prolift suck cock and wont sell me another one. <img data-cke-saved-src=

    Mate,

ive tried putting my whole body weight on it and nothing! It's just not budging at all.. It's got a little play up and down but nothing once the lever is activated. I'll happily sell you the whole thing I'm just about to use it as an efficient door stop at this stage..

Well a bike weighs around 400kgs, so how fat are you? More weight while keeping the release valve pressed would be my suggestion. And check the little button's pushing in when you press the lever too.
As a last resort, which I don't recommend, I know a guy who kept the lever pressed while wacking one with a hammer. I'd be worried about damaging seals or something, but if it works...
Make sure to put a mark on the shaft so you can see if it's going down btw.

Pull it apart and sus it out, there's a nut on top of the housing.

This sure is a mechanical conundrum !!!! Personally ,, I would'nt want my 400 lb bike any where near a faulty lift or jack !!! If it is something simple that you have not work out, and you get it working the way it should , thats good ,, If not , fuck it off , and get one that works the way it should !!!!
