    Hi Guys,

I would like to know what Genuine oil i purchase to change the Engine, Transmission and Primary oil

I have a 2015 Soft-Tail ,  I rang HD and they want $500 for the first 1,600km Service which is ridiculous i thought, I have always looked after my cars and Dirt bikes so i am wanting to do this myself

I just want to make sure i buy the correct oil , in the You tube videos they all talk Quartz etc when advising how much oil to refill

can someone also tell me the exact amount i require for each Hole , As i plan on changing all 3

and just to let me know which Genuine oil is the correct one for each hole,

I dont want to get confused or be recommended other brands of oil, For this service i just want use the genuine oil to avoid any confusion

Thanks in advanve for your help guys

    G'day WarDaisy,

H-D Syn3 for your first service with a genuine 5 micron oil filter.  Not saying this is the best oil, but it will save a lot of headaches if you have a warranty claim!

Start with 2.8L in the engine oil tank and top up from there when hot, 950ml in the Primary Case and 950ml in the Transmission.

$500.00 is NOT a lot of money for the first service IF the dealer does everything that is supposed to be done, it is far more than oil and filters.

Personal experience has taught me to do my own servicing and do it right.

Best advice ... purchase a genuine H-D workshop manual for your model and follow the service schedule to the letter.  They are about $70-$80 but will pay for themselves after the first service.

Without going into the nitty gritty, check EVERY nut and bolt with a torque wrench, belt tension, tyre pressure, battery security .... bla, bla, bla.  All the little things that don't usally get thought about, and this will cause reliability :)

    Cheers,

    Pete

War Daisy, Just like to point out, before doing the service to a softail, always ride the bike a few k, then when get back drop enine oil ( from oil tank )

As Harley's are dry sump & oil tank sits up under the seat & crank case is at lowest point on bike, it's always possible if bike stands for a while, some oil will run into crank case. you want it all up in the oil tank when your changing it.

Personaly i don't like useing Synthetic3 in all three holes, i like a gear box oil in gear box, with primary i've never tried Sythertic 3 so can't say, but should be fine.

    Hi WarDaisy,

Best thing is to buy a Factory Service manual, they're about $75 and worth every bit.

As mentioned above, take bike for a good ride to warm it up so you get all lthe old oil & any suspended crap out when draining.

In regards to oil, I use the Harley formula+ oil in the primary, Penrite hpr diesel in the engine (20w-60 mineral) and penrite 85w110 in the trans. Used to use the HD360 in the motor but since switching to penrite wont go back, same with the trans oil where i used Formula + in the past. Sorry, just realised you didnt want oil reccomendations!!!

If you have a bike lift, it makes it very easy to drain all 3 at the same time.

Your bike most likely came with HD360 in the motor & Formula + in both primary & trans. Pretty sure about 2.85lts in motor, 945ml in primary & 945ml in trans BUT confirm with your service manual.

Wardaisy as much as it sounds expensive and yes it is, your best off paying for the service while under warrenty because if they can find a way out of it they will and not services by auth mechanics will void it

I would also HIGHLY recommend you get a Scavenger! It's the best thing you will get when changing oil, and gets all the old crap out of the bike. Trust me, you will check your oil 5000km later and it will still be clean!

as the Mongrel said. Get a Scavenger, they are worth their weight in Gold and you will never look back. Using a Scavenger gets ALL the old oil out of the motor and doesn't leave any old crap in there. If you change the "normal" way, there still about 950ml of the old stuff left

How does the scavenger get down into the Crank case? also does it use an electric pump? or hand pump? asking as want to learn.

    Cheers

Check out the website. Basically you put it one and start the motor. It pumps all the old shit out while the new oil goes in.

+1 on the scavenger. Had one for a couple of years now. Only problem is the oils that clean after a change it's hard to see on the stick.

I will pull the spark plugs out when the oil filter is removed and turn the engine over with the starter motor until the oil runs out of the filter housing clean.  ;)

Re the Rouge Scavenger,,, Do your research , (check their videos , etc ),, Because different models / engines , have different methods of scavenging the oil !!!

Syn3 make's good business sence. less trouble to stock, one does all.

as long as they last two years the factory don't need to worry.
