hi I have a 1996 dyna convertible and riding the other day I herd a squeak and find it coming from the coil/electrics mounting bracket on the left hand side I pulled the cover and electrics out today and flu d a big crack around 150mm long starting from the top front of the bracket and it's also started cracking from the bottom right as well. My question is has anyone had this happen to them at all. The bike has never been dropped I know this as my old man bought it new and gave me the keys two years ago it's strange as the Mounting bracket is around 2mm thick. And is it best to tig or mig weld the crack as I can get either done from a mate. Thanks for reading and I hope someone can give me an idea why this has started.
Have seen coil brackets brake on sportster evos And other bits On softail ,from vibes and fatigue factory is mig So what ever is easy for you or mate mig or tig
I have cracked , a lot of coil brakets on Harleys over the years think i cracked one on a 2001 Dyna also cracked belt gard, always use braze ( gas flame or tig to weld but i just made a stronger braket so it never happens again. its the good ol Harley motor that does it works like a giant impacter . rubber mounting & counter balace on different models helps a bit but, eventually
good luck with it.
