    Good evening,

First day today working on the bike, managed to flip the mirrors without any issues.

tried to remove the passenger back rest and seat and when i did, the screw to secure the single seat is missing (just a hole there) is this normal? how do i secure the single seat to the bike?

also another issue i have been having, the oil cap seems to be in a very strange position, pretty much every time i sit on the bike the oil cap hits the inside of my leg and raises from the down position. does anyone else get this? is there any way to fix it?

some terrible pics attached to try and show you what i mean...

    thanks in advance

    oil cap popped up.

on the bottom pic the hole to the right is the one on the seat, the one to the left is the one on the bike that the seat should screw into

When correctly fitted, the cap should sit flush to the tin after it is pushed down.

If i remember correctly, On my sporty when I had it. You push the Oil filler cap down and it will make a click sound to hold in, Then to get out again. Push, another click sound and it raises.

thanks guys, that should sort the seat issue!
does anyone know if the quick release seat hardware kit will do the same job or if i still need tha screw part to make that work?

    http://www.blacktown.hddealersite.com/store/store/parts-accessories/sportster%C2%AE/seating/detachable-seat-hardware-kit.html

with the oil cap, it is flush with the chamber, but when i sit on the bike the inside of my leg touches it and is enough pressure for it to pop back up. is it possible to get one that locks? or has a different open/close mechanism?

was hoping to get this sorted today, but it seems like dealership parts counters are closed on sundays (in Sydney at least)

hey ben, if its a quick release seat hardware "KIT" it should come complete with all the components
when you buy a fender seat nut from the dealer it comes with the fender nut and plastic clip and also an aluminium knurled screw with a flat head screwdriver slot in it
I would assume that's a quick release kit cause you can loosen and tighten it with your fingers, I use a stainless washer and a nylon washer above (beneath the knurled screw) to stop binding/scratching and I always nip it up with a driver to be sure (stops the seat being easily removed by hand if some low life wants your seat)
like I said it costs around 5 bucks from the stealership

Mate, once you remove the circlip the seat nut that protrudes through the fender will fall out. To help you get this back back into the new hole, slide a zip tie through it and then feed that up from underneath through the hole and pull it into place. You can pull on the zip tie and that'll hold it in place to get the circlip back on. I couldn't get my fat hand up there when I changed mine over and this sorted it.

Thanks for the replys everyone, managed to relocate the rear screw to the forward one with no issues. Will order another as well as the quick release kit and see how that goes.

Also managed to sort the fuel cap issue with a bit of a fiddle.

Did a few other bits as well... Top tip. Remember if you are going to remove the reflector strips from your motorcycle forks, don't try to remove the residue glue by liberally spraying the whole area with WD40, especially not the brake disks and pads. Your welcome!

some wins and a major loss, hopefully the brake cleaner sorted out the disks and will give the pads a light sand tomorrow, otherwise will be getting some Lyndalls on there.

im new to all this, lots more mistakes to come no doubt. Although now i know how to take brakes apart and replace them myself so not all bad.

The WD40 thing isn't all bad, it'll help with any squeaks the brakes might make........ :)

put it all back together today and seems to be all good, cleaned everything with brake cleaner followed by a bit of a sanding off of the pads. can start riding again tomorrow!
