Starter Drive Housing Disassembly

    Hey Guys,

Has anyone pulled apart a stock HD starter Drive Housing assembly?

I am trying to do it on my 09 FLHRC and although it has black crappy paint all over it the two screws they seem to be very poor quality and with soft phillips head screws.

I haven't burred the screw heads out but they are showing signs of wear... is there a trick or tip to get the buggers out as I dont want to snap them or round out the heads?

I've used break cleaner to clean the grease, dirt and grit out, then I used WD40 on the heads to try to lube them up... Can I use a long small socket as It is hard to see what type of heads they are... The main reason is I want to change the starter clutch assembly to an all balls kit because I am having problems with my stock 'original' clutch assembly.

I am getting pretty pissed off...

Once again, cheers for any advice....

    gday Ads,

I often use my 1/4 inch drive ratchet set that has an adapter socket that takes various driver heads for these fucked up screws,
you can apply loads more down pressure and use the ratchet for more leverage/purchase on the screw head. way more than you can get with a standard screwdriver
have used this method on many seized and burred Phillips head screws including outboard marine motors with mild corrosion/electrolosis with great success
hope you have a win buddy
    cheers

Hi Ian ,, uploaded some pics for you...   I thought you would be back !!!!

Split starter motor on a bench with towel,  so you dont lose anything ,, and also the armature will stay in place and not fall out/ apart .....    Good luck ....

If phillips screwdriver wont fit , use a small socket ... May have to scrap around the hex head  with small screwdriver to fit socket properly ....
