1/4 Fairing or Windshield?

Gents, sorry if this has been posted before I did search but couldn't come up with much, and I'd be interested to hear anyones thoughts - I'm planning my first big ride, almost 2,000km return in 4 days heading out west to Broken Hill and back in spring, it's a lot of kilometers and while so far I've had no issue not having a windshield and I enjoy the breeze on my face I'm wondering if the extra fatigue might be an issue, let alone all of the bugs and trucks I'm likely to pass on the way.

Solution wise I've come to two optons, a quick detach windshield for trips, I like that I can leave it off most of the time but have it on if I'm going somewhere, or a 1/4 fairing, they seem to cost about the same, but as I've used niether I'd be interested in your thoughts or suggestons.

    What do you reckon?

I reckon that might be the way to go mickle, but having never tried either I'm not 100% sure - does the windshield make a big difference?

BJ, I have a 16inch quick release on my FXST, Mickles screen looks like either a 20 or 22 inch. Great ride to BH. done it November 2011. Plenty bugs, You cant go wrong with a screen, Sit on bike and get someone to measure from Top of head light to between your top lip & bridge of nose to get right size.

Not sure on the height of mine as I had no choice, with the Freight Train headlight fitted Harley only have the one size

    to suite.

Not a bad idea Pauly, although I wanted to wait until I hit old man status before investing in a tourer ;) Got the Dyna now, it's got to be a 10 year bike for me so no doubt by the time I hit 40 I'll need an upgrade to something a bit softer!

lucifer, we aren't far apart and your trip was a bit longer than mine will be, how did you find the trip without a windscreen or fairing??

I've used the same setup as mickle. Got the hd king size windshield which is quick detach. Also use the fork mounted wind deflectors which I think you can see slightly in mickles pic too. They stop the wind coming under the screen which causes buffet. Makes it really comfy and easy. But the wind deflectors are not quick detach so that's the only down side.

Awesome lucifer, that's the main reason for our trip, other than the trip itself, is to check out the Mad Max museum, got everything else I need and just trying to figure out whether the windshield is going to be a worthy investment but will be throwing some big km's into a short period of time!

Reckon if I got a call to be in adelaide in 26 hours, I'd probably fly!

Yeah and look I've thrown the idea around a bit, but I really love my bike and if I were to put it up for sale I might get $16k out of it, but then who knows how long it would take to sell, and then how long I'd be stuck waiting to find the right new bike as well
