Hi all,
Have been looking at the fat 50 spoke rims - have heard mixed reviews on the build quality of some brands and the handling of the bike when there fitted. Apprently they are considerable heavier and thus carry much more centrifical force making it handle differently when turning and braking ( so I have been told )
Want to keep the same Black rim, Stainless Spoke and alloy hub theme in the original size.
Any reconmendations regarding these ? Any pics would be great.
Thanks in advance
Yeah mate I have the same questions. I'm keen to get a set of fat spoke wheels but have got a quote of 3k for rims and tyres then powdercoating ontop. A FXDWG I looked at in my local shop had them fitted with wider tyres front and back. Looked awesome. Im not keen on splashing out that kind of cash to take another step backwards???? Can any of you Aussies make a comment on your experiences?
Hi guys yes they are considerably heavier and you notice it at the start but after a few minutes of riding you adjust pretty easily.
I've got a 21 front and 18 rear on mine, purchased in Australia from Walka at vpw.com.au rims only delivered to my door for about $900
Looks great mate. I checked out the website you suggested and the prices are good. Just a few more questions. Is it a pretty straight forward conversion when using the standard brake discs etc...? No extra spacers etc required? I have a reasonable mechanical ability but have never changed over discs and belt drive on wheels before. I had a look and it appears pretty basic. Also do you remember how wide the rims are and what size tyres are you running? Im keen to put a 200 on the rear and a 120 on the front. Is there any clearance issues with the 18 on he rear - My wide glide has a 17 standard. And lastly I'm concerned about the handling of the bike. With the rake of the wide glide and apes I have installed it is not the best handling bike compared to others I have owned. Would hate to make it worse. I like to ride with a bit of spirit if you get my drift - well as much as you can on a FXDWG LOL
Cheers mate, it's all pretty straight forward. I changed my trees to fat bob ones cause I like the wider look but they are the same as a wide glide minus the rake. So the hubs on the wheels are wide glide but you will have to get the correct 1 inch bearings which I would recommend just buying new ones anyway. From memory i think I had to space out my front caliper to get the wheel to sit center but it's easy to do, brake discs and pulley are a straight swap. My front is 21x3.5 with a 120/70/21 metzler 883 and rear is 18x5.5 with a 180/55/18 metzler 883, 200 on the rear really depends on the brand of tyre you use as not all 200's are really 200. My 180 metzler sits dead center and I've got stuff all room either side where as I've seen blokes run avon 200's I can take a photo for you if you like. As for handling as you know they are a heavier wheels so of course they will feel different but I got used to mine within the first ride and still love it
Good advice fellas. Cheers. Just need to sell one of the kids to finance them.
