Gday all . My 2010 fat boy has a problem starting after it has warmed up or hot , no probs when cold

sounds like the starter wants to jump out of the bike , also sounds like the starter is strggling or a compression lock

then will start usually the second or third time ......But this does not always happen ??????  ANY CLUES OUT THERE  PLEASE

Battery and conections all good .

Have you actually load tested the battery mate and if so, what load did it hold and what voltage does it read?

Hi Grasshopper ,,  If your battery comes back good , it may be your starter clutch ,(inside starter motor),  is starting to fail ....   It is a common problem , and most evidence points  to the  compensator as the culprit , (the bang at startup) ,, even if the compensator is good ,, putting strain on the starter clutch at startup ...

If your problem points to  the starter clutch, its a fairly simple job ... (if your not handy with this stuff,  remove starter motor from bike, and take it to an auto electrician with new starter clutch assembly, approx half hour's work )...

    1. Remove Starter Motor from bike

    2. Split starter motor

    3. Remove old and replace with new starter clutch ,, button up starter motor.

    4. Install in bike

Below is info for 2010 Fatboy starter clutch assembly  ...  Item 20 ....   (All the parts in diagram come in one piece )..  see  pic !!!!

An alternative Starter clutch assembly other than HD,  is a , "All Balls Starter Clutch Assembly",,  see  pic ,,,,   larger gears , etc ,,

Note,,  if you do replace the starter clutch ,,  Warning,,,  There is one small ball bearing (show in pic),, it is installed down sharft ,, make sure you only install one ball bearing when assembling starter motor back together !!!!!!!!!!   Ask me how I know !!!!!

PS.. If it works out it's not your starter clutch,, as least you will know a bit more about your starter motor !!!!!      Good luck ....

I think i fixed it.  pulled starter to bits ,cleaned all the guts out ,there was alot of black stuff on the arbature came off with wet and dry

. had the battery checked again came up good . but is 5 yrs old!!!!!!!!!!!   , bit the bullet and got a brand new battery. NOT A PROBLEM SINCE   done alot of short start stop rides all cool.  BUT WHAT A MONGREL job it was for me to work out how to even get to the starter.. first time ive done it.

THANKS ALL FOR YOUR ADVICE.     Grasshopper.
