Harley Assist is great peace of mind IF you live in suburbia! Over here in the West, out in the dessert, it's a whole different story.
My FLHTK suffered the dreaded coolant leak. The dealer where I purchased it from suggested I not ride the bike back to the shop and went so far as to tell me that Harley Davidson has issued a DO NOT RIDE order on the defect. I asked if they could assist in getting the bike to the shop, but I was too far away, but did say if I could get it into Perth they could pick it up and take to the shop.
Well, that's all well and good, but, I was over 530km from the dealer's workshop (400k's to Perh).
I rang Harley Assist and explained my dilemma and they were very helpful, until they told me that they only cover transport costs to a maximum of $550.00. They did a ring around for me and rang me back to tell me a tow operator would come out from Perth and it was going to cost $1,000.00, or cost me $450.00 after they paid their share. I found a local tow truck driver here that would do the job for $500.00, but because he wasn't on Harley Assist books they could not pay him!
After a lot of internet research and observation of when the coolant leakage actually occured, I eventually (cautiously) rode the bike to the dealer with no ill effects.
Harley Assist can be a trap for young players, perhaps imagine a simple flat tyre or worse still, catastrophic engine failure in a remote location, it can still cost you a fortune, even with factory warranty that you may not have planned on!
Ride On,
Pete
I have RACQ Ultra membership. Have never been let down. they have towed me back to Qld twice without a whimper. Can't say enough about the service. Forget HD assist, go with your local car club.
Just for the record Harley assist cost me $100 last renewal, will do it while i have the bike.
Harley Assist is a dodgy service run by Allianz insurance. They dont employ any HD technicians or MC mechanics.
If they arrange a tow, your bike is dropped off at some random depot until HD service is open.
As per my previous post, its an insurance compny that will scam you with the fine print.
And then there is the argument over getting your bike taken to your dealer versus the nearest dealer.
Cheers, Surly
