I've just done a home and re ring on my 92 Evo softail. It's was running fine I the. Replaced the cv carby with a s&s super e now after 300kms when the motor warms up theres a scrapping sound coming from the front cylinder. I've pulled the barrels off and every thing looks fine no marks in the bores so put it back together and is still making the same noise. Has anyone came across this before and if so what was problem. Or can anyone tell me what to check out next. This is doing my head in trying to work it out. I'm handy on the tools and can do just about anything but I have no idea where start inv next. I have a service manual but it hasn't got anything on this in it.

Have you positively identified the noise as coming from the front cylinder mate? Did you check ring gaps?

I can't 100% say it's the front cylinder but the noise is isolated in the front bore. And yes checked ring gap. I used hd rings the top compression rings had no markings for top side or bottom side if you know what I mean which way to place them.i gave it a bit after tuning the carb just after the the new rings went in around 150kms and hit 5,200 rpm afew times that's when the noise started next ride.

Ok. What exactly am I looking for with the sator. What signs am I looking for.

Would say crebbo would be referring to the magnets on the stator rotor there common for letting go Hence may
Lead to scrapping /rubbing /grinding sound

Other thing maybe push rod rubbing on  inner push rod tube

I just pulled the primary cover off and found I have in and play on the clutch hub where the chain runs is this normal or could that be the noise and is trance ring through the cylinder. I'll pull the rest off the front tomorrow when I get an 1.1/2 socket.

Been a few mths since I had a clutch hub off can't remember ever having end float just remember
Clutch hub nut is lefty thread so undo it as if your doing it up compensating nut is normal thread

Mate, run it, take a screwdriver and put it to your ear and define exactly where the noise is coming from. You can easily go on a wild goose chase without properly ascertaining where the problem is before ripping stuff apart.

Will do when I get it back together. Stator is fine what I did find is the inner primary bearing is rough so I'll replace that could the noise from the bearing travel through to the motor to make it sound. Like its the motor making the noise. Another question what's better to run in the inner primary sealed bearing or the standard set up. I don't have a wild set up. Motor has EV27 cam accel ignition s&s carb and screaming eagle 11 pipes and mufflers.

Noises do seem to travel a lot on Harley engines and do seem to make a few strange noises at times
Which does make you paranoid as for the bearing it's been like that for the last 23 years of her life
I would just replace it With what's in it and some new seals jackshaft seal ,main shaft seal and a new o ring primary case to engine for what there worth whilst your there

I have to ask did you tune the carb or just bolt it on and go riding.

No I got mech mate of mine to tune the carb but now it's running rich as f""k. Does anyone know the part number for the sealed bearing to replace the old set up. My sister inlaw works for a bearing shop so it'll be easy to get bearings I just need the part number for the sealed in need primary bearing. That race is a right pain in the arse to get off but I got it I ground it down and cracked it with a chisel and then I came off easy it would have to be the worst design I have ever seen while I'm at it I might as well change the clutch hub bearing as well so I don't have to go back in later. I've got a mech stephiscope coming so if this doesn't fix the noise I'll be able to pin point the noise. Thanks for the replies if anyone can think of any more things to check or do while in this far please let me know so far it's been a easy to pull apart. All so can I replace the comp sprocket to a larger one the one on it now is a 24 tooth I want lower rpm on the highway atm it sits on 2950rpm @100kmhr and first gear is about 15-20kmhr or can I change the rear pulley with out doing the belt and front pulley. Thanks again for the replies.

Can't help with the part number for the bearing that you don't use the the Oem race last time I tried to
Get one thay matched it up to the same size bearing as the later wheel bearings which is almost the same size
But to tight on the main shaft not slip on like it's supposed to be it was more of a press type feel I got one of
eBay from easy riders that you use with out the race it was a few thou bigger And slipped on an off like it should
Maybe you might have better luck at getting it matched up I can't remember what the exact diffrance was
But the bearing that the bearing shop supplied was a 25 x 52 x15 nsk And the one easyriders supplied had no numbers and was some China bearing. If you get the right one let me no I will keep that number written down ta

I've replaced the inner cam bearing to a Torrington a while ago when I put the ev27cam in. If I can get the bearing and seal numbers I'll post them up here. I live 5mins from easy R so I'll call in and see Wayne and also see if he will let me measure the bearing up I buy all my gear from them they have great service and great prices.
