Hi
Well I just about finished installing a new sator and rotor.
Put in the plate for the clutch adjuster and was cleanin out the rebate for the circlip when I noticed what looked like a crack.
I rubbed a little grease into the rebate then wiped it out, a pair of close up glasses and a torch revealed a crack almost half way round, a little bit of pressure from a small screwdriver opened it up easy, then broke off. The diferent colours on the broken face indicated that it had been cracked for a while.
This area is flimsy to say the least concidering the froces exerted by the clutch pushrod, I thought HD made things stronger than needed, fuck the effort needed to get that bloody comp nut off would indicate the they do.
I'm glad I spotted it now instead of it self distructing at speed out on the road.
Any one heard of this before?
Now I'll need to make another tool to compress the spring, only the ones I've seen use the clutch adjuster hole to screw into. Only thats gone now. So I was thinkin of attaching to the outer starter sprocket. Any Thoughts?
Thanks Dug
Take the clutch hub off and compress it the clutch pack than remove the cir clip than seperate the clutch hub/pack parts you need a press or make the tool with a hole to go through center of hub with thread rod to compress the pack
I've been giving the subject some thought.
The generaly accepted spring compressor uses the hole in the clutch adjuster to attach to.
If this was tightened down too much, I think this may be the sourse of the problem, it isn't a robust part, they have a thick bit of steel then a circlip pushing against a few mills of alloy, just doesnt look adequate.
I supose there is a better part out there, but I"ve got the new part on the way.
What do you think of this? It would mean I dont have to pull every thing out again.
