Popping on deceleration - De-Tune AFR?

    Hello Guys

I have just bought a new HD48 and loving it. One thing I have noticed is that on deceleration there is on the odd occasion a large POP that would no doubt leave people pissing their pants. Funny yes, but.....

So, if I was to De-Tune (Screamin Eagle Race Tuner Pro) the AFR between 1500RPM - 4000RPM & 0 - 50 (throttle) by -0.4, will this help for casual riding?
Leaving 50 -100 throttle settings as is will ensure Play Time/Performance when required correct?

I understand this will consume more fuel but its a trade off as I dont want to draw any unwanted attention.
Ill also be fine tuning the VE as well, but this will not aid in popping.

    Cheers guys.

You'd want to be certain that your pop is a result of being too rich before removing fuel. It the pop is a result of being too lean, removing fuel would not be good.

Have a look at a table called deceleration enleanment or similar

    Ah thanks Fatbat

I have also worked out that it only pop on a cold engine. Once it heats up its all good.
As its a brand new bike, I'll let it settle in first before I even contemplate altering the AFR.

I'll record a few rides and just alter the VE (Smart Tune) for better/smoother performance.
However as the bike sets in ill have to do it again a few 1000's down the track no doubt.

Thanks again Fatbat, you have been very helpfull on many of my posts.
Harley's are new to me and loving it. Not sure why I even bothered with the race bikes in the first place. Enjoy Harley Sportsters so much more.

No worries I hope it works out. I have a tts which is similar to the screamin eagle tuner (same developer of the original screamin eagle tuner) but different software interface and a few diff features. But they both work in similar ways by flashing the exact same ECM tables. The software interface may name tables a bit differently but they probably have similar names.

Exhaust popping can happen due to being too rich or too lean. If it's only happening when cold and not warmed up, and the pop is singular and large, it sounds like it might be rich and as a result of the warm up enrichment table which you could adjust. This table's purpose is to add fuel until a certain operating temp is reached.

If rich popping is happening irrespective of whether it's warmed up or cold and around closing the throttle your decel enleanment makes changes to your fuel around speed decel and throttle sensor close. The classic decel rich pop occurs after you open the throttle hard/fast causing another table to increase fuel supply and then you snap the throttle closed. This often results in a single large pop and adjusting your decel enleanment table is the table to adjust.

Try to avoid changing your air fuel ratio tables unless there aren't any other tables that will address the problem as changing the air fuel ratio tables makes changes for all conditions when the problem may only occur under a single, specific circumstance. I hope this makes sense.

Thanks Fatbat, your advise sure does. Thank you.

I'm going to re-flash the XL1200 +Stage 1 MAP (assurance) and perform a SMARTTUNE to modify the VE tables (AIR) with several test ride recordings.
I did this on my 883 and had great success with smoothness and performance. It might help mitigate the popping on cold starts, but not holding my breath.

Ill review the Decel Enleanment values as you mentioned to see if I can see what its doing around the cold vs hot operation.

Oh, found this in the Screamin Eagle Pro Race Tuner Manual for AFR:
This table affects the Air-Fuel Ratio Target for BOTH Front & Rear Cylinders simultaneously. This table charts AFR vs. MAP and Engine RPM.
    - Increases make the AFR Target leaner (leaner = less fuel).
    - Decreases make the AFR Target richer (richer = more fuel).

This would indicate that if I decrease the values (EG: 14.6 to 14.2) I would be enriching the fuel.

Any who, Ill start with the default flash and Smart Tune the VE tables and see how I go.

    Cheers mate.

Yes, dropping the af ratio is increasing the fuel. If you're not sure about this kind of stuff, be really careful what you do or take it to a shop.

Smart tuning sounds like vtuning in tts speak. I think it'll only change the ve tables.

Agreed Fatbat. I'll leave the AFR alone for the experts and draw my attention to the warm up enrichment table and decel enleanment table only. (Observe)

I'm going to re-flash this Sunday and record several rides.
First will be from a cold start just so I can see the warm up table in action.
Then I'll creat an additional 2-3 warm recordings that I will map back/smart tune to the VE tables.

I'll post my findings/results Sunday arvo.

Thanks for everything mate. It's good to bounce ideas/thoughts of those in the know.

    Cheers

Hello All (With a special call out to Fatbat)

I went to re-flash and smart tune my 48 today, well............ this ended quite quickly. I need a 6 pin connector as my current cable kit is 4 pin! Ha Ha Ha
Ordered online, so now ill play the waiting game.

Went for a quick run this morning to show a mate and he pointed out a little patch of oil on the ground. <img data-cke-saved-src=
Traced it back to under my seat and the oil cap. As the oil was very clear all the way up would indicate it may have been a mishap, over filled or cap seal not working.
I've cleaned it all up now, levels are good so will just keep an eye on it. <img data-cke-saved-src=

Don't you just love running in new bikes! Not even 100km yet! Ha Ha Ha
Will take if for a run this afternoon along the beach to help break her in. Such an inconvenience! Ha Ha Ha

Did you only copy ve tables and afr tables from tts to se tuner - I have been looking at doing the same myself

    Hello Guys

    Status Update:

Well, while waiting for my cables (6-pin) which just arrived today, I experienced an issue Monday when filling up........ my 48 puffed a huge cloud of smoke (white). When I got it home the Oil was very low.
Saturday my mate pointed out that I was dripping oil but on inspection, it looked like it was just a spill when the dealer filled it up as there was a small pool of oil under the seat, oil levels were good and no sign of damage.

So yesterday I topped it up with 20w50 mineral oil (only 400km) and road to work. Once I pulled up oil was billowing out from the oil sump making quite a mess. Oil levels were still high but thought mmmmmmmm. This is the second time, something's not right.
Dropped it off at the dealer today and will be taking in my SE Pro Race Tuner as they will also be looking at my tune. They advised they will remap it given my other issues experienced. (Idle, surging, stalling, popping).

So, Ive had quite the ride! Ha Ha Ha Ha
Am I phased? Nope, still love the 48!

Oh, I was provided a loan 48 with stock exhausts and air filter. Dam this thing is quiet!!!!!
The amount of idiots trying to kill me because they cant here me while I'm abiding by the road rules! Dam!

I copied over all tables. Some had no change others slight changes. From memory AFR table changes are the greatest, hence a better fuel supply under decel. He's happy as it is but we're still going to smart tune it.

It makes a huge difference if you have two screens to do it. If you have a issue I can do it for you. Let me know what maps your using and I'll knock it over when I get a chance.

Cheers 357SQQ001 for the Screamin Eagle and DAA358-03-A1 for the TTS im assuming these are the Correct maps to use for 2013 Fatbob FXDF with SE Heavy Breather and Vance & Hines Shortshots

    RESOLVED

Got my 48 back this afternoon and was given the rundown of my issue(s).
The Oil leak was due to a burst oil tank. Basically there was a fault with the Air Breather and the crankcase holes in the back. They weren't punched out correctly on the supporting plate.
As a result excess oil/fuel was not being recycled through the air cleaner and as such caused an excessive amount of backwards pressure. BOP went the oil tank!

Once the Air Breather and Oil tank was replaced, the dealer reflashed/tuned the bike and she is as good as gold!
Decel popping is practically gone and performance is up!

Time will tell now as I work towards my first service (1,600km).

Very impressed with my dealer (Perth Harley Davidson). Great Sales Office and Great Customer Service. Made me feel welcome and got me back on the road in no time.
    Most importantly, no scratches!

Thanks everyone for your input and advise. Learnt much along the way and will use in the future.
    (Special thanks to FATBAT)

The fatbob is a 96 yes? That tts file is for a 1690 103 motor. Do you have a 103 in it? Also I can't find the SE file you quoted. I can find 357SDR001.dto, which is for a 1580 stage 1

    Ok cool I'm on it

Give this a go. AFR is richer. Both ve's completely changed, some spark differences but only in the upper rev ranges. Slight differences in the Cranking Fuel Table

Let me know how it runs.
