Hi all , has anyone tried to quiet down the vance  and Hines short shots with quiet baffles ? Any ideas on how to quiet the exhaust down or know of a better exhaust besides stock ?

I had short shots on my last bike and i tried the quiet baffles and they didnt really do much. Slightly less noise slightly deeper note. I tried them without the fiberglass matting. That didnt do much. I took the welsh plug out of the end. Made them louder but i didnt like the note. I welded some stainless door screen mesh where the plug used to be. That was the best i thought they sounded but no matter what you do with baffles they are a restricting flow so after straight through, everthing else sounds muffled and just not as good. I have big shots on my current bike and i put those same modified baffles in them last week and they sound pretty good. Going to leave them in for a while. I think the longer pipes make them sound better.
    Cheers

Meh, I've got Bigshots and I'm not overly happy with them either. I did love the loud sound, but the plod aren't as happy and I was amazed how loud they are even with the quiet baffles. I was looking at a set of smart pantz baffles, but a friend has them and they didn't do a real lot to lower the noise from what I could tell.

I have short shots on my 2015 fatboy and they used to hurt my ears, I put the quiet baffles in and am very happy with them, they are still very loud they have just taken that raw bark out of them.

You won't really get them much quieter no matter what you do. I have them and love the look of them, used to love the sound but am now over their loudness. Switching to a nice 2 in to 1 soon.

So pretty much my options are return back to stock , with the EPZ getting on peoples case re motorcycles and noise you would think there is an exhaust that is not real loud but has a reasonable amount of grunt

yeah there are options for a quieter exhaust, just not really with the V&H short shots.

stock headers with some brand slip ons are reasonably quiet and give good performance and some 2 into 1's are pretty good.

some are quiet down low then roar when giving some stick which is ideal to me, at least you can control the sound if you need to around town and Mr. Plod

after being EPA'd for my V&H big radius I fitted screamin eagle dual shorty slip on's to my 09 softail, not much louder than stock at first but after a1500k's developed a deeper sound. Recently I took out the exhaust packing inside the mufflers and left the baffles in and far better sound now, deeper and louder, SOUNDS LIKE A HARLEY NOW but not annoyingly loud.
Last weekend re-fitted my BR's, fuck me, I forgot how loud they were, almost embarassing, might change back soon to the SE's, kinda got used to the deep soothing rumble without being offensive. Baffles in- packing out sounds good. Doesn't set off alarms on parked cars.hahaha

sounds like aftermarket mufflers on a stock pipe is the way to go , its a shame that they dont look as nice as a vance and hines.

or just cruise around on the the short shorts and be easy on the throdle

Lots of good advice , Has anyone heard of smatpartz hore core quiet baffles ,

I got a email from a sales rep they reckon it reduces 5-6 db at idel and 8-12db at 2000 rpm , not sure if these claims are realistic , i have seen some clips on youtube and some are quiet and some are not much different.

    Has anyone used these ?

My lady has short shots on her Sporty, when first fitted they were so loud, I said to her that I was not going to ride behind her as the exhaust was way to loud.

I put the quiet baffles in and it did make a difference still a bit loud but much easier on my hearing when I ride behind her. They look great on that bike but im not a fan of those loud pipes....

I found the screamin eagle's exhaust offer a nice subtle note with no annoying bark but i didn't notice any increase in performance but sound better than stock pipes.

your never going to get them quiet, if you like twin pipes then like others have said put standard de catted headers on with some nice slip ons like SE or S & S. If you like 2 into 1 the pro pipe is also a good pipe. Mine was still a little loud so I took it to a bike exhaust shop and he modified the baffle for me.

ha ha, it's amusing to hear blokes wanting to quieten down vance @hines pipes when the reason they fitted them was for the "tuff" sound and because every other slob on the block has em, me I'm sick of the sight of them, seems like they are an generic fixture for Harleys now, I wait with anticipation for a NEW generation of pipes to be developed and guess what, they will look a lot like stokies, it'll be back to the future again.

I'm changing mine soon as over the years I've become a bit over their loudness, I still love the look however.
You listed 2 reasons why people fit them Bob but neither of them was the reason I did.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion though but you know what they say about opinions !

I've got short shot slip ons, had the quiet baffles, they didn't do much, added the smartpartz baffles to the V&H quiet baffles.. For me it's perfect, louder than stock but nowhere near as loud as the V&H baffles, sound good to me on the bike, loud enough to let traffic know you're there.. But not likely to get me pinged.

Performance.. Probably not as good as a full through system but marginally better than stock.
