    Hey guys.......

I got nabbed a couple weeks back for noisy exhaust pipes on my 87 FXST.  Am just waiting for the EPA letter to arrive and then get the noise levels tested.  I'm 100% sure it's going to fail so am looking for either a way to quieten down the existing pipes or, most likely, find a replacement set of pipes that might come withing the 105dB level.

Any suggestions?  Here's a pic of the current pipes.  I'm told it a HiLo set?

    Advise or help much appreciated

    Cheers

    Kuz

Motorcycle or tricycle Date of manufacture Noise level Before 1 March 1985 100 dB(A) After 1 March 1985 94 dB(A)

105db level, I think your mistaken, should be around the 94db level at 4625rpm.( I believe your allowed 2db for manufacturing variance and 3db for wear.

You will only achieve this with stock pipes.

Kuzzo, I would agree that stock pipes would be the go for the test.

Was just looking at your bike in the "Show us your bike section". The bike in this thread has got a much fatter front tyre on a smaller dia wider rim. Which one do you prefer?.

any pipes up to about 2006 will fit your softail, plenty about and cheap too, I had to do the same thing to get an 87 softail through comp, rego.

Noise test came in at 98dB, so time to make it less noisy...........

Finally ended up with a pair of slip on HD Screaming Eagle shorty's, just finished fitting them. Lot's quieter

I've been through a few pipe combo's on my old softail and had to get inventive with exhaust brackets too, current setup is 2 1/4" big roar, good luck with the test.
