Just saw my old bike riding around, I traded in on a brand new Street Bob from HD Dealer last November (NSW)... still had my Qld rego on it.  Called main roads, yup, still registered in my name... WTF?!

Rang the dealer who said they sold it "as is" with the condition that it was up to the new owner to change the rego over.... Don't think so...

Won't be dealing with those guys ever again....

Still rego'd in your name eh?. Cancel the rego and get the balance credited back to you then!!! That will stuff the new owner from doing the wrong thing and not transferring the rego!!

You need to cancel it anyway - otherwise speeding fines and whatnot will come to you.

Hi all...Here in NSW the rego papers have a notice of sale slip you tear off and fill in and send to the RTA when you sell your bike.It covers you from the new owner not changing the rego over in to their name. Its foolish that anyone wouldn't fill out the slip and send it in to cover your own arse.Im sure every State has the same thing. If you have done this you have nothing to worry about.

Following disposal you as the previous owner have 14 days to notify motor reg....which would prevent this from happening and free you from any liability.

You also have the option to cancel rehistration and surrender the number plate to motor reg if it is sold unregistered.

I always fill out a notice of disposal online as soon as they leave. Got caught once with someone elses unpaid tolls and it was a headache filling out stat decs .
But in qld i thought unless you had a pink slip when selling a vehicle you had to hand the rego in and sell it unregoed.

Another get out of jail card would be that his trade in would have been listed on his purchase document for the new bike clearly showing trade in details and giving ownership to the dealer.

Is it legal to sell a vehicle "as is" (ie:- no roadworthy ) in NSW or QLD without first canceling the rego'?
I know it isn't in VIC.

In nsw it is legal to sell a car without a roadworthy but they are done every 12 months anyway. In qld you need one to sell the car with rego but don't need one every year.

I don't think its any big deal , and definetly would'nt go cancelling any rego , its only going to ccause problems for yourself and the poor guy who bought it , in good faith . Where i would be concerned is wether or not the dealer if he was'nt vigilant in this one , was vigilant in wether or not he's doing checks on finance owing on bikes .

Although i'm not sure if buying of a dealer covers you ,or not its something i would definetly be checking out ,, If he's that slack , who knows any secondhand bikes he selld may have money owed on them .

With any vehicle I have ever traded at a dealer I have never filled out a notice of disposal and given it to the RTA...Maybe I am just lucky but I have always assumed it's the dealers resposibility...

Chopa, you're right. Cancelling the rego is not the right thing to do because of the problems that it causes. Just send in a transfer notice for a records up date.

I was a little over the top with my previous post. .............

Get it sorted asap….old mate will get a ticket and you will fight like hell and spend money to prove it wasn't you.

The traffic infringement notice will always remain on your traffic history and there is no way of getting rid of it.

I've fought the department long and hard to get them to change their policy but they won't. Good luck.
