So it happened....  as the it ticked over 4500 k's, hasn't skipped a beat to date... I parked the bike, and came back to find it had dumped it's coolant, bottle empty? wtf?

Big thanks to Harley Assist.... at their call they sent a towy (and a great setup they have for the big bikes) and shifted it the 130k's to the nearest dealer.

Now the fun starts!! am waiting on parts ex east for a service recall on the coolant system...

I'd followed some older posts from the first of the Ultra's that had some issues, but haven't seen any raised here.

Anyone else had troubles to date??

Thats no good mate !!! So, from what you wrote,, there is some type of recall on the coolant system, that was'nt done to your bikes coolant system ..?

There a few guys on here that have the new twin cooled motors ,, they will chime in, and will have more info on the recall , and what it entails !!!

    cheers Mark

This is where it gets weird..... purchased the bike last Oct.... 1st service Nov.... returned bike to dealer late Nov/ Dec for safety recall (clutch fault) and whilst there asked about rumoured coolant issue and told no problem due to manufacture date of bike.

Arrived yesterday to dealer (different) and told no records of clutch or coolant fault being delt with? They're gonna do the clutch again... ( fair enough - safety issue). And as for coolant fault (which is a service notice only) they thought I should have been notified about that. Hmmmmm??

Sorry cannot really help here, I have the 110ci wet head with 9500 ks (2015 model), to date it hasn't used any
coolant, I think China had a problem with a Temperature sensor or something but no leaking issues.

Am curious to see how this pans out come next Tuesday. As soon as the dealer realised there was a service bulletin on the coolant system, I don't think they bothered to LOOK where the leak was coming from....
I'll share the info as it comes...

When I had a disappearing coolant issue with my bike I took photos and emailed them to the dealer along with a description of the problem and what I saw as a possible solution. The reason for doing this (I learn't the hard way when dealing with a workshop not far from me in Morley) is to provide a tracable record of the issue and to help the workshop staff in resolving the issue because they seem to struggle solving problems unless it is layed out step by step for them. ...

I also request confirmation by email that the recall parts are in stock and what time the work will be started and how long it will take before bringing in the bike - I have had three recalls on my Ultra so far (two for the clutch and one for a cable) and additionally I have had to take it back when the coolant started to disappear and when it kept stalling which was traced to one of the injector wires being pinched between the frame and tank.

Thankfully I do all of my own maintenance and only use the dealer for warranty or recall work.

    Update:

Thursday 5th;Had brain fart and thought to have the dealer who did the original work and this shop have a chat to each other. Confirmation that clutch was sorted last year (hadn't processed paperwork), but the coolant neck had been inspected but not replaced.... ooop's!!
Saturday 7th Stripped part off showroom bike to make this one a runner.... shop not concerned with my issue over leak from elsewhere.
Monday Pickup bike first thing.... am still concerned over leak from pump area. I guess we'll see how it goes?? (Shop apologetic over issue.... but should have been dealt with by original dealer.... fair call)
Thursday 12th Arrive Brisbane 9pm, 4330klm, no leaks, no issues.... a great run across the country.

They were right.... and I'll get back off my box! learnt lots of lessons here....

Here's my sad tale ... Bought my Ultra Limited in November '14. It was a Harley Demo (so I figured all the bugs would have been fixed, wrong). Moved job and house to the Wheatbelt, WA and after settling in I was going to go for a ride and found the coolant bottle empty when doing my pre-ride check!

I rang the dealer and they sent me a litre of coolant. I refilled the coolant bottle and found that the coolant was overflowing onto the ground when the engine was shut down. I rang the dealer again and was told that the problem has a "do not ride" order from Harley. Because of work commitments, we booked it in mid January (this was late December 14). I contacted Harley assist to get the bike back to the dealer and was told they pay a maximum of $550.00 for towing, but they could get a tow operator to come out from Perth and collect the bike and take to the dealer for $1,000.00!

I did a bit of net research and found that if the throttle is twisted past 1/2 way with the engine stopped (ignition on) the fans will come on. This stopped the coolant leaking when I turned the engine off (I mentioned this to the dealer mechanic and he had not heard of it, or so he said, but it is in the service manual).

With that knowledge, I rode the bike to the dealer (+/- 600km) without issue, only to be told they didn't think they had the parts in stock! To their credit they "ratted" a new bike to do the repairs.

By that stage I had lost all confidence in the bike. I enquired about trading it on a new Road Glide or Street Glide to get away from the liquid coolant but they didn't seem interested in that. They did offer to sell me a tourpak quick release kit for a "good price" but that was the last I heard of it. I even stopped at another bike shop only to find I would have to drop $8,000 on the trade in price! Didn't happen.

My wife refused to do our planned trip over east because she is terrified of getting stranded on the Nullabore.

2,000km later my confidence is slowly returning without further incident. Adding a Screaming Eagle air cleaner, V&H Fuel Pak 3 & Pro Pipe High Output has certainly improved the bike out of sight, so now I just have to install some confidence back into the wife ;)
