I am about to replace the oil pump on my 96 Road King. This is the second time, the machine and me having clocked 327,000 km in the 17 years since I bought him. The first time, I did not replace the shaft, as I couldn't for the life of me see how you can get the shaft on/off without separating engine from transmission. This time I thought maybe I should replace the shaft as well as the rest of the pump. Any ideas about how to achieve this?
if the shaft is not worn i would not replace it , if need to & shaft hit's the trans you will have to take the engine out of da frame , i can not see why you have to replace oil pumps unless you have had some metal bits go thru her it , if so would only stuff the scavange side of da pump body a little bit of damage is not a problem on da scavange side as its greater than da feed side & will still scavange , i replace the 4 gears & keys & c-clips & clean up da pump body for smooth operation & check the end float on da gears & flat plate da body & clean out your oil tank properly very important with new oil line's @ least
Thanks for that DaddyRacer. I will remember that after we have clocked up another couple hundred thousand Km and the oil pump fails again hahahaha!!. cheers, Geoff
