My minor rust problem

Hi girls and boys, new to this forum but I own the Berlin Wall Software Supermarket in Adelaide and have a 2001 Softail Heritage classis fuel Injected and the other day Inoticed droplets of fuel seeping from the steel tube from the tank underneath that holds the cable from the fuel gauge to the sender. This all came about originally by my fuel gauge moving erattically instead of fluid smooth.

Peter Stevens (PS) kindly loaned me a spare non EFI one and fitted it to diagnose whether it was the gauge or sender. Turns out it's the gauge and ordered one. When I looked underneath the gauge at the well it calls home, it's very rusty in the lower left side, bike on side stand does that, and when I poked the base I could see fuel weep to the surface when tank is full and then puddles and works it's way down to the pipe and then drops onto the engine head, hot day, hot head, maybe catch on fire.

Anyway, I have now cleaned up the area, put a piece of steel plate in the area and used Araldite to hopefully temporarily seal it, then when dry have painted the whole area with a rust inhibitor.

My original gauge did not come ot was fitted with a rubber seal ring and the loaned one also did not have one, nor does the ordered new gauge come with one, it's an 'extra'. So, today I ordered one.

My point is perhaps, check underneath your gauge to see if any rust, now, not tomorrow, and, I'd love to know if anyone has had this same experience and how they dealt with it.  My email addy is rob@berlinwall.com.au, I can also email you photos of what it looked like when I first discovered it.

As it is an 01 I'm not sure if/where I stand warranty wise as a new tank shipped and painted is just over $1200.00, not cheap, PS are investigating now for me.

Hmm, Scotty, me old mate, no doubt I'd expect that from those that change bikes like they have hot dinners, your avatar speaks of your highly!!

Anyway, 51,000K, in 8 years and not a mark on the bike and still like new and very trouble free in all that time, 2000K on the 08 Haybusa suggests I favour cars as much as bikes means I'm just your underaverage in love lover of bikes, use them when conditions are perfect or I just want wind in my face, hopefully not yours either.

Clever Rob has fixed his problem for now and looks good but only short term, long term it's cheaper at $1200.00 or so and 8 weeks to get a new tank prepainted, 8 weeks to get it over from PS, 30 minutes to install it, makes good sense to me.

The main purpose of the postings was to perhaps alert anyone to look where your not suposed to look, just in case, the guage is not hard to lift off, once a year, just too see all is well.

We tend to ride more with Cruiser that Ulysses or HOG, thinking about Sabre but not sure even if I can keep up with them on the curves on the Hayabusa, they seem a great bunch, I guess there is only one way to find out.

If your not bored yet or asleep, maybe I see you on the road one day, again.

Thanks all the rest who have responded and welcomed me here. Email me if you want to be looked after for computer software. www.berlinwall.com.au  Scotty knows I don't need the money, just like to look after fellow riders.

Hi there, seems this is a big problem with fuel injected HD's as the fuel gauge sits in a well and the well is not sealed from outside elements, the moral of this story rwally is, it's not what you can see it's what you can't see, so, for those that want to, lift up gently the fuel gauge and peer underneath, if all clean and clear, happy riding, if any signs of rust, fix it, short and simple.
