    Gday guys,

My Evo is giving me the shits. Had trouble starting it. I've put in a new battery, and threw some new spark plugs in yesterday. It's trying to start, but can't get it over the line. I have spark. It sounds a bit "gurgley", fires once and the pipes kick in, then just stops. It's sounds a bit gurgley and I get the odd tiny puff of smoke out of the carb. I've got a new s&s e type on it. I've not ridden it in 2 years as I combined a bit of travel and a license loss. I'm back on the road now, but the bike isn't playing the game. I know I have to get fluids etc changed after a long lay off, I just want the bloody thing to start in the meantime. A few days before my license fiasco, I had a full service and got new pipes and carb fitted. It's been playing up ever since.

I've got a feeling I left the petrol on at some stage, and perhaps I'm flooding it. If this is the case, do I need to pull something off to clean it or drain it? I'vegot the bike manual, and I can't see anything in there about this in the trouble shooting guide.

Very grateful for any help. It's frustrating the shit out of me.

    Cheers.

did you drain the old fuel and put fresh stuff in ? Pull the plugs now are thay wet or dry ?
If wet crank the motor over sevreal times buy starter with plugs out put another set or a clean set in
Try again make sure battery is charged fulley as if it is not the ignition wont fire strong enuff to lite the fuel

Cheers mate. I pulled the new plugs from yesterday, they have black carbon on them already. Cleaned them up, then tested the spark against engine, it's orange instead of the blue/ white required...it's too sunny on a Sunday morning to be as pissed off as I am....

Had a big rest for two years, straight back into party mode,,,, sounds a bit gurgley, she's got a hangover !

After sitting for that long I wonder if the needle and seat might be a bit sticky and not completely closing ?

Needle and seat, lets fuel flow into carby and shuts it off when fuel bowl is full. If he doesn't shut off when fuel bowl is full then floods and overfuels.

Righto. Thanks for that. I took the tear drop air cleaner off, there wasn't any petrol in there, a small amount of petrol sitting in it, really small. Wiped it clean....anything else I need to look at and clean?

It could be that the float level in the carby is set a whisker too high.

Alright. Time to get the manual out and go again. Is it hard to get to?

Needle and seat gets my vote, new fuel would not go astray either

98superglide, mate I reckon your fuel is bad to start with - you may have another issue, but as others have said, drain the tank and try fresh plugs and fuel and start again. Check your spark with a plug grounded against the motor when cranking - should be nice and blue. Good spark, can only be fuel or compression if timing is ridiculously out.

    good luck

Also check fuel filter or strainer for crap and blockages.

These days the fuel is crap and it leaves a residue of shit in the carb when left sitting it might be an idea to pull it off and give it a thorough clean out.

I hope not mate, I got the service and pipes, carb installed. It wouldn't start the next day, then the bloke couldn't see me for a couple of weeks, which annoyed me. Then I lost the license. Got it booked in WED. Just want to ride the bloody thing. I've got a couple of weeks off, and after 2 and a bit years, I'm keen as hell.

Just got a call from the mechanic. Picking bike up the morning. He said it's solid as a rock no problems. He said the carb wasn't tuned properly and it never had a chance the way it was. He has whacked it on the Dyno, spruced it up and I'm stoked. I will get some more info off him tomorrow when I pick it up. Bloody grateful for all the help guys. Cheers.
