    Hi,

Just wondering if a re-map is needed when fitting a K&N HD1499 Air Filter to an 08 fatboy (un modified, standard exhaust)

    Thanks

    Rob

You should be fine with just that mod. If you put pipes on then a remap is required.

If you are going for a high flow filter I would do as daddy says above and put a tuner on or get a remap. The newer models with the Cat converter in the exhaust do run very lean to start with and there is very little scope for 02 variation in the standard tune parameters.

    DaddyRacer,
It's a standard replacement filter that goes in the original air cleaner assembly. Do you still think it would need retuning / richening up? Have read a bit about these xied things and am thinking it may be an option considering the entire bike is standard & will stay that way for a while.
Bike is an 08 Fatboy 96ci

    Retroman, I am in Melbourne

On my 2008 Anniversary FXSTC Softail custom ( same mechanicals as your 2008 Fatboy ) I had the stock air cleaner box with the flapper valve removed and a K&N "drop in" HD1499 K&N stock replacement filter. I used the XiED wires from Nightrider in Florida and the bike ran very respectably for a "stocker". I also had Khromewerks tapered slip on mufflers , which looked 100% stock but were straight thru' design

Later I got into the original SERT tuning software and then the TTS stuff thereafter and i still use all of that

The K&N HD1499 and the Xied wires will work well for you , good "bang for the buck".

Is your bike an "Aussie " bike or a recent used yank import ? The Yanks got way better stock exhaust mufflers than us in 2008

    thanks Retroman,

my bike is a US import, brought it out last year. I have noticed that the standard exhaust on it looks a little different to the aussie ones, more the outlet which seems larger and less restrictive. sounds better compared to the aussie ones I think with std exhausts. Am really happy with it the way it is, just want to make sure I'm doing the right thing by it. Not really into performance, just enjoy riding it tooooo much!

Not sure what you mean by the flapper valve? when I remove the air cleaner, there is nothing between the back of the filter & throttle body, except the backing plate of course!

    cheers

The "flapper valve" or "Active air" in Harleyspeak was only on international models so no worries there

And yes . you have the best performing "stock" exhaust , which has no catalytic converter ( "Aussie" bikes do !)

As a result they have more of a beat than Aussie bikes

You'll be fine with the K&N drop-in and the XIeD wires mate , just get the correct ones for a US spec 2008 bike

i must admit tuners are expensive , i don't own a late model bike mine are all pre 1980 , but i work on a lot of late model harleys there like  latemodel Holdens & ford's everybody's got one , even mydailydrive  car is old 1982 944 & HQ Olden Prem factory 4 spd manual, if you can afford it the tuner is best as mod's go + Dyno's etc not many full stock bike's out there as there such a slugbox stock with the EPA laws,

    Daddyracer,
Understand where you're coming from however for the time being I just want to ensure that the bike isnt running lean. In the future I intend on doing the exhaust (V&H big shot staggered) and at that time will go the SERT.

    Retroman,
I have just ordered the XIEDS so I'll report back on my findings with them once they arrive.

I have the V&H Big Shot staggered on my 2008 CVO Springer. They were on it in Texas ( it's a used "grey" import )

I WOULD NOT HAVE SPENT THE MONEY ON THEM HERE IN AUSTRALIA MYSELF !!

THEY ARE WAY TOO NOISY !! OBNOXIOUS TO A DEGREE !!

Being a cheapskate ( haha) I have not replaced them with anything else , as the bucks are already spent ( albeit "Texan" bucks !)

If I had been starting from "stock" I would have used the stock OEM header pipes , they actually work VERY well , and I would have put Khromewerks or some other straight thru slip on TAPERED mufflers. That is 100% the best bang for the buck with regards to exhaust mods. My Springer CVO had the "Fatboy" type setup as stock , just the stock mufflers are unique to Springers
