Has anyone taken the time to work out a list of must have tools, to work on different HD models for touring road side repair ?

I have a 1995 FXD Supergilde, and am planning for an interstate trip, and am interested in knowing what is the bare minimum tools I need to pack.

Obviously there are repairs you just would not take on from the road side, and the requirements will differ between year makes and models, aftermarket accessories, and mofifications.

I just wish there was a guideline for my model.

Have RAA membership, have mobile phone & card with credit. Missing the leggy Blonde, do you have a spare I can borrow ?

Whatever tools you need to get the wheels out, remove/replace exhaust, replace pads, drain plugs. Spare nuts and bolts, soft wire, cloth tape, pliers, screwdrivers, common socket sizes, spark plug socket, emergency belt, allen keys, torx bits and driver. pdf manual stored on your phone. That should cover most things.

I carry a puncture plug repair kit and a motorbike compressor which plugs into the HD charge trickle charge lead to run.

I haven't broken down for decades but I've had a couple of punctures in the last ten years and whilst RACV membership and a credit card will work it still takes hours generally and I can plug and inflate a tyre in 30 minutes.

You know what, there are things there I wouldn't have thought of, but great Ideas ( punture repair kit, PDF manual on Mbl.) and a good list by Smokey61. Cheers Guys.

Aside from some all-purpose stuff (rachet and connectors, spark plug remover, multi head screw driver, electrical tape, shrink wrap), I only carry tools specific to my bike (spanner size for battery lead bolts, a few  socket heads for relevant parts of the bike).

Of course, aside from a blown headlight and lost seat screw, the only thing that happens to my 1992 FXR is electrical! So I pack spare battery lead bolts and lead clips, and am now thinking I should pack a voltmeter and dialectric grease!

PS: and usually I only use the credit card, as noted above (aside from religiously checking the battery, as my leads like to vibrate loose)

Service your bike, take those tools with you. Plus a roll of tape and some cable ties. Any more than that and you are fucked anyway.

With the manual thing, get your phone and take a photo of the pages you want to reference down the track.
