Yesterday I had the Bobs oil temp (according to temp dipstic) show 266F on a stinker here in WA after a ride to Perth and back so I sent the below email of to Penrite to ask about max OIL TEMPS before the oil starts to breakdown/deterioate

    This is what I sent

I have just broken it in using the Penrite run in oil and now are running HPR Diesel 20w60( Mineral) until I get 5000ks on it and then will run the 10TENTS 20w60 ( synthetic)

My question is what temp are these oils ( HPR Diesel and 10tenths) good for and what temp do they start to breakdown/deteriorate?

Today a hot day here in WA my oil temp got to 266*F is the oil still doing its thing at this temp?

Look forward to you feed back on the temp rates and of these oils

only ever used penrite and will continue to do so

    This is there responce

Based on your enquiry regarding your Harley our recommendation is:

The conversion to centigrade (F ,minus 32, times 5/9) takes us to 130C. This is coincidentally the temperature that I normally regard as the limit. No-one’s engine oil is much good if held for long periods at this temperature, but the synthetic oil will handle it better than a mineral product.
Your engine is over 1900 cc (in international units) and isn’t actually listed for Australia or NZ: it’s not in my European database either.

    For the smaller engine…

Harley-Davidson, Dyna FLD/FXD, FXDB Dyna Street Bob, GXM, 2012-
Manufacturer: Harley-Davidson Motor Co. Inc., Milwaukee, USA, Drive type: Belt
Cylinder capacity: 1690 cc, Engine Twin Cam 103
    Petrol, 4-stroke, 2 cylinder, V, 2 valves/cyl, air cooled

    Year-round API: CH-4 SAE 20W-50
    Below 4 API: CH-4 SAE 10W-40
    Year-round API: CI-4 SAE 20W-50
    Below 4 API: CI-4 SAE 10W-40
    Year-round API: CJ-4 SAE 20W-50
    Below 4 API: CJ-4 SAE 10W-40

They’re after a diesel type oil (it handles heat better), so because the bike is under warranty I’d actually go for the semi synthetic HPR Diesel 15 (SAE 15W-50, API CI-4+) or preferably the dedicated bike oil MC-4 ST SAE 15W-50 (semi synthetic, API CI-4 + also).

After warranty, the Racing 20W-60 looks good, but then you’ve opted for synthetic over going for diesel oil.

    Regards,
    Alan Jeffery

Are you running an oil cooler on that bike ? Yesterday was 39C it turned out !

I run those "Oil cooler collars" , which slip on over a stock black oil filter , on both my CVO's and ALL my mates run them now as well

They drop the oil temp 20F at least , and for 50 bucks delivered from the US they're way better than Harley's own "Premium Oil cooler kits"

I started a thread on them on here 2 years ago maybe ? Buy them off US eBay 3 or 4 at a time to save on post cost.

I've tried to post the link , but either the forum or my old XP desktop are having none of it this morning !

    I personally have run 100% synthetic since the mid 90's , Mobil 1 15W50, Mobil 1 V-Twin 20W50 , Redline HD20W60 , Penrite 10/10ths racing 15W50

Basically whatever I could get for the price at the time , I'm not all that "loyal" !

Rode myself to Scarboro yesterday lunchtime , and it was as hot as Hades on the way home although I hugged the coast as much as possible !

Oil temp' dipstick showing 215F when I got home.

The link. Harley used to sell these in the accessory brochure all thru the 90's. They do work well for the price

Carbon I reckon ya right and I am hanging on this pipe to get a tune done

Retro I have a Jagg cooler on its way, one of those KP oil filters that will go on shortly also full syn oil will go in aswell

Until pipe comes and tuned I will park it up in these temps

What CHT 's are you seeing ?
I really think you are seeing a side effect of
    Your compression.

    I met a guy at a bike show here in Perth in 1995 , where I was showing my 1974 Kawasaki 750 H2B 3 cylinder 2 stroke

He had just rebuilt/restored back to stock a Candy Blue 1974 Z1A 900-4 Kawasaki , and had done a real nice job

He told me that at least while "running in" he would not use it on days above 28C

I've always just used my Harleys whatever the temp , you've kinda gotta I suppose , but have used synthetic oil and oil coolers of various types for near on 20 years

This arvo is MUCH cooler than yesterday thank F**k !

    Funny things these twin cams.
Too much oil flow to the top end can cause high temps.
I've seen over 300f Cht's but had the oil temp still below 120c.
I run a 10 row jagg vertical cooler.
