Booked in my iron 883 for first service and being the only dealer in Adelaide,SA ,Peter Stevens/harley heaven has quoted me $430.I was seriously thinking of going to Adelaide bike works as this price is ridiculous.but was a bit worried about the warranty things.Anyone has any advice on this will be very helpful..Ta

i read on other forum tread tht someone bargained n got a $280 deal for the first service of his 48. I believe he raised an alarm saying tht he is going to Adelaide bike works if they dnt compromise on price!!!

That was 2 years ago though...

I pay $288 for a full service from my independent motorcycle workshop using genuine H.D plugs, filter and ALL fluids + clutch, pressure plate and brake adjustement
$430 is the reason they are referred to as STEALERships, but i have heard of blokes paying more than your 430

First service is a big one. All fluids, re-torque on most bolts and a pretty time consuming check over. I know its a bit late, the dealership up here throws in labor for the first service so mine was around $100 for fluids and filters (softail). Take it anywhere and warranty wont be voided under Australian consumer laws.

Ony had my sporty for 14 months... because the previous owner didn't do much on the bike the first 9 months was difficult to get it running like it should... on one konk out on the Gawler free way a Harley rider said take it to Bike Works... it has been there a few times and the guys there a pretty good... got things done to it like a service, rerouting of breather tube, new tyre, new battery and battery terminal adjustment and a couple of other things... I found the major fault myself as in the ignition coil connection was loose... that fixed the performance and reliabity beyond believe... never konks out now and runs like a dream... it's like a new bike now... anyway, as I have never taken it to Peter Stevens for anything I can't comment on their service side.. all I can say about Peter Stevens is when I wanted to buy a new Harley the price they offered to me for a 2 year old sports tourer as a trade in was so low it was embarressing, so I kept the sports tourer and bought my sporty privately... One thing I have learnt you loose a bucket load of money when you buy a new jap bike, even when it is only a couple years old... best thing is to keep them if they are good and you can afford to...I hate giving something good away for a fraction of the cost you paid for it... anyway I have a great Harley sporty and a great sports tourer and I didn't lose any money... you don't lose until you sell, so I have a absolute dynamite fun bike that looks absolutely beauftiful with my sporty and a jap sports tourer when i want to go interstate and go on long country rides... perfect combination for me.

This point has been raised before now , will a "service" from other than a Harley dealer affect your warranty

I have had many new Harleys in the last 20 years here in WA , and I always do the first oil change service myself , all 3 holes on a Big twin ( 2 on a Sporty !!)

Actually I do the "first service" twice , around 500K's and again between 1500 and 2000 depending on timing !

I've never worried about "losing" warranty , and I have had a few warranty items dealt with no worries by Frasers on a couple of bikes over the years

I do a LOT of servicing for other dudes as well , often "out" of warranty , but regularly bikes under 2 years old

In answer to "Bogie" , massive depreciation on nearly all Japanses bikes is as much to do with the " new BETTER model every year" syndrome

That's one of the reasons why I got out of big Jappers and into Harleys 20 years ago

I can quite clearly remember all the bike mags decrying "last years model" as being shithouse to the max compared to the latest 199* YZF/KZR/CBR...

hey there Bogie, are bike works a H.D dealership?
Did you find the coil fault before or after you put the bike in for some lovin?

Don't think they are a HD Dealership... Don't really know much about them.

I found the fault after... not Bike Works fault... I thought it was the battery and battery terminals... stupid really as I didn't know bugger all about the sporty...I should have taken the bike in and said, 'hey guys, got this problem can you fix it'... tts amazing how one tracked you can be and be completely wrong.

One thing is whatever I got done to the bike I never got a bill that I was surprised by and on one occasion I took the bike in and they did some work on it for nothing.

No they are not not but you will find Blair is a hd tecq I think and mate don't let the big dealerships scare Ya
As long as it's done by a qualified motorcycle mechanic and get them to stamp your book and date it and tick off what they do
All hd dealership labour is expensive hey

    That's nuthin.......

I took my girlfriends Suzuki TU250 there for a first service and got charged nearly as much.

Their excuse was "Oh,Valve timing needed to be checked"..........What ? A 10 mm socket and some feeler guages ? Im not a fuckin idiot.....I was doing this when i was 16 years old.

Not only this......When i got it home I noticed oil all over the sump of the engine which made me think there was an oil leak.So i checked the level to find they had way overfilled the crankcase.

The filter cover that is sealed with an o'ring was also covered in white sealant shit.(sort of defeats the purpose of an o'ring)

I took photos of it before draining it to an acceptable level and taking it back to read them the riot act.The person I had an argument with about the price the first time wouldnt even look me in the eye.

Then they carry on like they did me a favour by "replacing all the oil a second time".......I should fuckin hope so.

Then on top of that........the fuckin "Harley Mechanic" comes walking out and looked all of about 25 years old........

I had some cosmetic issues with my Harley when i first bought it too which I had to push to get rectified.

Every time I've been there I've seen a reason not to go back.

Thats not even mentioning the issues I had with a Honda Fireblade I bought back in '07,or the mark-up that goes on accessories and spare parts.........

My first service on my GSX650F was a nightmare... took it in down south (I think they have closed down now)... went to pick it up and the guy stuffed up the credit card payment and said I had to get cash... walked across South Road to the bank and nearly slipped down the middle embakment on the road onto oncoming traffic... got the bike home and bits were hanging off it like the indicator leads... found out they had taken the money out of the credit card as well and had to wait to it went back in.

Anyway I think the 12,000 service is going to cost up to $600 bucks or more... the bike is out of warranty, so I am doing it all myself in stages leading up to 12,000 km ... as you get bugger all for a jap bike if you sell it why put big dollars into service if you can do it yourself properly... not only that you know it's all done and you learn a thing or two about the machine you didin't know before... forums are great info for any machine you have... it doesn't matter what you got you can find info about it online.

The battery was stuffed anyway... so needed a new one... so I didn't lose any money... or get anything done that wasn't needed, it just wasn't the main problem at the rime.  I must say upon closer reflection, if someone came to me with the same problem (konking out all the time) I would look at the ignition coil for them first no matter what they thought the problem was... anyway, I have now got to know the sporty pretty well and can service it and maintan it myself.

I'm thinking that you are paying in excess of $25k for a bike, yet complain about the price of a service, have you not concidered Harley tax?

My Triton service is just under $800
the wifes Porsche has 3 levels of service with the minimum at $700

the option most people take is dealer service while in warrenty, you tube and do it your self after

I rode out of Frasers with my new bike and never went back for servicing. I do it all myself, drove straight home opened her up and did the cams, pushrods, lifters, cam bearings, changed all fluids, straight to LA Cycles for a dyno and couldn't give a fuck about warranty.

Probably a wrong description... battery leads were extremely tight leading to the battery terminals and more slack was created...

Mate save yourself a fortune and do the work yourself. An evo engine is solid and simple. Get a hold of some decent tools. Keep a diary also of all important numbers and things you've foubnd along the way. List on your first page all of the main specs like fluid levels and oil types you've used. Keep a history of your servicing on the bike so you know here you are up to.

Follow the workshop manual - buy it instore or try this link if it still works - i'm curently on a work computer and this url is blocked so i'm not sure if this link is still live -

I fitted my 1200 kit which was reasonably straighforward. Only thing i did was have the heads cleaned and new valves put in by a local engine builder. Only cost 60 clams.
I saved alot of coin in the process and had a ton of fun doing it. A few beers and a few hours each night in the shed and learnt a thing or two along the way.
