Cant speak for a 103 but my mate has a twin cam 88 in his Softail and its done 90 thousand Ks and hasn't had any dramas. Doesn't use oil and still runs like a clock.Hes got a heavy breather , slip on mufflers and 211 cams , apart from that shes stock.Hes had it from new and I think its a 2003 model , anniversary edition I think he said. I ride with him all the time and it goes great.

I can only express my experience

    I have a 2010 96" Dyna

I brought it in 2012 with 4000km on the clock & a Stage 1 fitted

It now has 80,000km on it

I've just had EBT do the drive train (Belt, Pulleys, wheel bearings, primary chain, tensioners, bolts, shifter arm, engine mount + all seals)

Next step will be a gear drive cam conversion and a switch to full syn in all holes at more regular intervals thn what the Moco calls for.

From there I hope to leave pretty much everything until 160,000km then I'll reassess

She doesn't use that much oil and isn't what I would consider smokey.

I ride her pretty gently (not babied but not flogged either)

I like my new mechanics approach to maintenance and wish I had have gone with him all along but live and learn.

I'd like to see just how many miles I can get out of this engine if only to quiet the haters who say harleys aren't reliable.

My experience is you'll wear out a lot of other parts before you wear out the engine.

I thought your current bike was a recently new purchase, why would you be asking about a rebuild?

Ride it until it dies then re-build it! Simple answer there, no need to waste your time searching for answers when you could be out enjoying a ride! Go for it man.

They are good till the bottom end goes, i had my bottom end on 01 TC 88 twist the flywheels moved on the pin at bottom of rods, took oil pump out. the bottom ends are throw away, or can replace with S&S that are re buildable. i was lucky to pick up a like new stock set ( owner went big inch. a friend spot welded the new pin so it could not slip. but i was runing high comp.

but if the case hardening on big end pin goes or the rollers go, can't re build , you would need a special set up to press out that pin, but waste of time if no replacement rollers or pin's sold. so can rebuilt the top end not bottom end so can really do full rebuild. Also my stock heads got small crack in them but 100,000k hard ride .

If it's any help , I just replaced the primary adjuster on my 08 FLHT, it had 68,000 kms on it from new and was still serviceable. I put an s&s 106 kit into her with 583 cams. Bores were fine, cams were fine. I used hd synthetic every 5,000 kms. All good .

So, how much would a top end re build cost ? How much would a bottom end re build cost? How much for a complete Te build? And how much is it just to buy a block engine?

How many ks do you guys expect to get out of a stock/minor mods/stage one engine well maintained?

Mate , there are sooo many 96 and 103 twin cams for sale on ebay/gumtree you'd NEVER have to rebuild yer original

That's because of the takeup of the factory 120R motor.

Some of these A and B motors have ZERO K's on them

Frasers Perth told me some time ago they have to FORCE the issue for guys to take them away after a 120R transplant, as their basement was chock fulla the things !
