using a second hand speedo on a 07 Softy?

    1. I have read that ,aside from the legal odometer issue ,a second hand spedo suitable for my bike -a 07 softy won't work ,as the speedo is either /or married to the vin like HD tuner box and/ or there is a conflict between odometer reading in speedo & ecu are different and a error code is thrown?-

I beleive that some ecu store the odometer and transfer it to a new speedo automatically by use of a data cable- and some speedo need the odometer reading to be installed by factory (moco)-the dealers can't do it.

I have a used 4" 08 rocker speedo -but don't won't to throw up an error code?

2.As an alternative ,I would like to use a Didital speedo /analouge tach either 5"-pt no 74717-10 or 4"- pt no 70900274 -but they are either suite 08 or later or certain features don't work-gear no or fuel gauge.

Does anyone know if they do work on a 07 softy , as at least 1 US forum contributor has said it does -saying the 08 wiring & ecu etc is the same for 07 & 08 softy?

    Thanks

    In my personal experience :

When you add an "accessory" speedo to a used bike ( or a new bike !) such as the ones with the built in revcounter , you have to use the supplied "data" cable and hook it up to your ECM via the deutsch connector, ( under the seat on a Softail ). This transfers the stored K's from the ECM to the display on the speedo in the tank. I have not been game enough to try and bypass the "ECM hookup" phase in case of totalling the new speedo

On the other hand , if you take a second hand stock OEM speedo and put it into another bike ( as I have with quite a few used US imports when putting a K's speedo in for compliancing and state rego inspection ) then the K's on the "NEW" ( but second hand !) speedo show on the bike as they did on the previous DONOR bike , and there are no other "married to the VIN" dramas

I HAVE ACTUALLY USED THE SAME 2008 SOFTAIL SPEEDO TO PASS 3 DIFFERENT BIKES , ALL WITH 33,600 K'S !

The guys then bought and I fitted the acessory Kilometre speedos with the revcounters. Then they showed the "correct" K's for the bike as converted from miles

Hope that answers your question mate ? I don't see why a stock OEM Rocker speedo would be any different in that respect

    Thanks for that info Retroman.-
I'll give it a go with the rocker speedo & see what happens.
    Cheers Wayco.
