Hi all just wondering I want to buy a new ignition lock for my 86 softail I've had a look tonight on eBay but I can't seem to find genuine ones, are the aftermarket ones good and reliable or does anyone know what they are worth from HD dealers  ?

if your talking about the steering lock yes you can get new ones from the dealer but you have to give them plenty of detail
proof of owner ship and apparently costs a few dollars to get changed yours should have the loop on the frame and
lower tree for a padlock anyway ,or if your taking about the ignition switch yep use the aftermarket ones in
electronic type much more reliable apparently ive never had any issuers with them apart from old age or lost keys
I use the later round key type

I just fitted a new ignition to my 87 softy, aftermarket standard type, works ok but not as robust as oem , different in design.

    ok thanks guys,

i decided i will go genuine last thing i need is issues with a aftermarket one, i called my local hd dealer who said i can get just the barrel and keys for around $30 but will need to disassemble the switch to fit, but they no longer sell the cover and pin so i will need a complete unit retail is $93

I wouldn't even attempt to pull one apart , as I said I use the after market type no issues
unbolt old one in the bin new one on just get the electronic type not the pole change type
I have theme on both my softails , if you get stuck I might have the cap and pin of a old one floating around
there only like $25 bucks for a after market out of the us maybe buy a few more bits aswell lol

thanks perthhog yea i wasn't going to attempt to pull it apart too may bits in there and they would probably all be worn out as well as it looks to be the original lock/switch

i decided i would get a genuine one but thanks for your advise guys all appreciated
