I could use a little advice from those in the know in regards to the current market.
A mate in Adelaide is looking to step into his first HD, is set on a good quality low mileage secondhand Fatboy, and has asked my assistance to locate a decent bike locally and help him negotiate a fair deal.
We've located an 09 model which appears in immaculate condition, with under 8000k's on the clock, and we're ready now to work towards a purchase on this one.
It's relatively standard with only a few extras included: detatchable sissy bar, S&S pipes, chromed wheels.
I'm just wanting to know what you lot would consider a reasonable ballpark asking price for something such as this on the current market, as the dealer has his figure on it, I also have a figure in mind, our starting prices differ a little, it's gonna be negotiating time first thing Monday morning, and I'd like to be prepared in advance to find a fair middleground price to aim for, so that everyone wins and a contract can be signed.
What say you?
Really nice bike man, I guess its worth as much as what your mate is prepared to pay for. Check out gumtree and see what people are asking for same or similar bike with similar K's (guess you would have already done that seeing as though you've been searching for a fatty) Got to be careful though ay, you don't wanna insult the bloke and he tells you to fuck off before you throw him a realistic offer. Maybe start by asking him how much he wants for it and then how much will he really take for it- then shave 5 hunge off that for tyre wear diminished rego, fuck man try and find a scraped pipe or some minor defect..he can only say no, its a matter of wether or not hes prepared to give up 500 bucks for the sake of say 20000... GOOD LUCK.. tis a sweet ride Let us all know how you get on Regards FLIPDOG
Fatbat, cheers for that.....you are EXACTLY on my wavelength.
My mate has $18k to spend, the dealer wants $20k.
I'm also pretty confident we can secure a "private" sale for the $18k without too much drama.
The thing is, this is a dealer, not a private sale. It's actually the dealer who services and repairs my own bike, I specifically took my mate there as I know they have good quality used bikes, I'm very happy with their services, I have faith in them, and I believe they would also offer good after sales service should there be any problems...my mate will also be using them for servicing, repairs, parts, etc, when he does get a bike, whether purchased from them or not.
Now I was gonna book my own bike in with them in the near future to get some modifications done to the front end, which is gonna cost me around $1k, so I was considering putting this work off, and instead lending the $1k to my mate, to bring his total up to $19k, and try to secure this bike for $19k (or under), then once he has repaid me my own cash, get my front end done in a few months time instead.
I agree with you totally! If we can get this bike for that sorta money I recon it's worth pursuing, but if the dealer wont come to the party we might have to let this one slide and continue checking out the market.
I believe it's currently a buyers market, there's plenty of bikes out there, and if we bide our time the right bike will certainly pop up at the right price...albeit I would "like" to support this local dealer if at all possible, we have to keep things in perpective though.
Bear in mind the dealer is backing the bike with warranty and his trading name. He also needs to make some margin on the bike to stay in business. My old adage is to spend a bit more up front and get a much better bike. Has worked out for me every time. $500 to $1000 bucks extra fades into oblivion later on down the track when you settle for a so called bargain!

Dear Diary:
Today Ranger got out of bed very early, with a rotten hangover, then drove for an hour in peak traffic to buy a Harley Davidson.
$19,000.................everybody wins!
Ive been watching this thread with some interest Ranger
i thought $19K was well done actually and it looks a nice bike
My interest was in relation to mine that i purchased seom 6 montsh ago
I bought a 03 100 Year Anniversary Fatboy (the 2 tone edition with black over grey)
Stock standard with SE slashcut pipes and NOT one mark on it (true)
It does have 45 000 Kms on it though and its a one owner and ive done another 3000 on it and its not missed a beat
i really wanted that colour of the 2 tone paint as it was used in the sales brochures of that year in 2003 and i coudl not afford new one then in 03 and when i saw thsi oen in the shop i had to haev it
New they were $33k ...............i paid $16K so i think your at $19k is a great buy .
New i expect them to be $26K with teh pipes and seat on it
Does anyoen think i paid to much for the 03 Anniv model
whats your thoughts
Might also be a good time for me now to thank Blair, Allan, and the crew at Adelaide Bike Works, and give them a bit of a plug. for their efforts. http://www.adelaidebikeworks.com.au/
Even though it's a bloody long way from where I live, they are my preferred repairers/service agents, they've always done well by me, they have a good range of quality used bikes, they're retaining my custom, and now they also have another new customer in for the long haul.
My mate is over the moon (I told him with the luck he's had, he must have been kissed on the dick by a pixie), and I guess it's also time to welcome him, the newest member to the Harley Davidson family of merry men, even though he hasn't even discovered this forum yet.
Guy I know had an absolute mint condition Fatboy 105 Aniversary model with 9,000ks and all the chrome you could think of installed on that bike, he wanted to trade it in for a Bagger and the dealer would only give him 12k for that bike. He didn't go ahead with the deal and kept his bike.
These days a Harley isn't worth all that much money like they were several years ago.
Hope you mate enjoys his ride, I do enjoy my Fatboy Lo but its always nice to have more than bike to ride
