Hi all and wishing a safe and happy new year!

Question Does anyone know if a Harley touring model exhaust would/could fit a Softail? I am searching for a new 2 into 1 system for my 06 FXSTS springer now the 124 S&S engine work is complete.

Bike pulls like a freight train and produced healthy torque on the dyno but the V&H big radius pipes seem to be killing horsepower.

I really dont like the appearance of most 2 into1 systems but Dirty Bird Concepts build a really nice Lake pipe design. The pipes are made to suit what the yanks term "baggers" which I take as being touring models?

I cant make contact with the dealer due to the Christmas/New Year break to ask.

Do Softail frames differ to a touring model and would it be possible even with minor mods this exhaust may fit?

Frames are completely diffrent and no they won't fit.

Anything can be modified depends on how bad you want them and how much you want to pay.

Most pipes are made for all models , hopefully they make the ones your after for a softy?

Don't blame you for getting rid of V & H. Anything will work better then them.

Thanks chriso! Looks like back to the drawing board. What is the consensus on running larger (2 inch primary) pipes on bigger cube engines?

Based on info gleaned trawling through the net it seems stock 1 3/4" header pipes may be restrictive. I am convinced a 2 into 1 system which works as an extractor scavenging in pulses from each cylinder is optimum for performance. I may be wrong too!

I had originally placed an online order with RB racing but after 5 weeks and no real confirmation at all that I even had an order I cancelled. No customer service at all.

I realise that exhaust selection has been hammered to death on the forum but it is most likely the most unknown quantity a HD owner can purchase. Its either tears or joy! Does it look right, does it perform efficiently, what does it sound like???

And yes the V&H radius are useless.

you are right on mate, 2into 1 work the best but,the good ones are fat, long, ugly and loud.

Google BSL Exhausts they do some tricky stuff and have the look ya after with 2 1/4" headers, pretty pricey though

Checked out BSL exhausts right on the money. They sure do some wicked stuff! And they do Softail systems, lots of them actually.

I really like this system, mean and looks the goods.  It looks like they are an Austrian company. Any clues as to an Australian distributor or any other leads on how to order?

The BSL web site can be translated into English, well sort of anyway.

Wow they sure are pricey! Converted the Euro cost to OZ dollars and its near 3k plus shipping.  Doh!

Back to the drawing board I reckon. Which supplier in Aust has the biggest range of quality systems off the shelf?

Any advice on which 2 in to 1 systems to stay clear off. eg: poor quality, fluffy/restricted  exhaust note etc?

are you after looks or power?none of those short pipes that end near your earhole will make power, you would not like the noise either.Have a look at thunderheaders, work very well, loud and long but they need to be to work, you can read all the wank on figures ect on fancy short shitters ect but it's all dealer driven hype for kickbacks.

Point taken, be nice to have both (looks and power) but its not the case in the real world. After spending 15k on my drivetrain it would be pretty foolish to short change the build with crappy inefficient short pipes. In fact the poor HP output of the V&H big radius proves it beyond doubt. The dyno results are the clear evidence.

Pipe design in particular 2 into 1 systems basically replicates the performance that extractor systems provide to any multi cylinder engine eg V8. From memory the longer the length of the exhaust tubes that drop down into a collector the greater the torque produced.

Another pipe I have found is the D&D 2 into 1 fatcat. Looks very similar to the Thunderheader but without the megaphone styled muffler. I have read all top reviews on the Thunderheader but for me it looks like it would be at home on a Norton Commando from the 70s. That's not a bad thing but its just the way in which its styled.

I'm really keen now to make a decision and get a new set of pipes and get the bike back on the dyno. I need it all sorted well before the ride up to Tamworth (HOG rally) late Feb 2015.

I will also post up each of the dyno print outs before (with V&H and after).

Agree with Chriso D&D is quality
BUT on a Softy it will scrape all day long on a Softy,,,,,,,,,,,, Now I thought you were after a typical look so didn't say anything but look at the Freedom Outlaw has a stepped header and will suit the big cubes and won't scrape

I'm sorry but looks and sound crank my tractor and I don't give a flying fuck for 8 to 10 hp if my system robs my motor of that? I like the rest of us on here have been down the track of try this and try that but at the end of the day go with what makes you happy with looks and what you think follows the lines of your bike,,,(,she is a godess)lol. and most important to me how it sounds.

    cheers Jimmy.

    Happy New Year.

I was gonna chime in with the d&d fatcat suggestion or their boarzilla for a bigger cube motor. Rb racing if you weren't in a hurry. Supertrapp supermeg is another and it's quieter than all of the others mentioned.
