Is a Fuelpak/Super Tuner really needed?

    Hi there,

Recent convert to Harleys after years of other bikes and am just starting to figure out what I want to do to my bike (a dead stock 2012 Street Bob).

So far I've realised I need new bars (the mini apes make me feel like I'm going to fall off the back under acceleration) and new pipes/aircleaner for a better sound and a bit of a power boost.

I've picked out some pipes and AC, but have been told different things about whether I need a Fuelpak/Super Tuner (a Screaming Eagle one or similar).

The dealer says yep, definitely have to fit it when the pipes and AC go on, a mechanic I know who works exclusively on HD just laughed and said no, as long as it's run over a dyno and mapped you don;t need to.

Given it's about $600 more, it's a big difference. So what's the story? Has anyone fitted pipes/AC without one or is it just impossible?

    Cheers,

    Scott

    Hi Scott,

You will need your harley engine management system re-programmed so that the correct amount of fuel is released into the engine after you change the air cleaner and exhaust to make your bike breath better.  The mechanic who puts your bike on the Dyno will make the adjustments needed via the super tuner or FuelPak so that your bike doesn't run too lean.

    Hope this helps.

    Cheers

    Dave.

So I do need to spend the extra cash for a super tuner or fuel pack? That pushes things back by a month.

Yes. I understand a Fuelpak will only deliver more fuel when needed (I used to have one) whilst the Super Tuner can be used to do that as well as allow changes to other settings including the timing (advance / retard), idle speed etc.

    Cheers

    Dave.

Ok, to clarify... I visited a mechanic to ask about a few changes (pipes, ac, shocks bars etc... The usual stuff...) and they said (and I quote) "yeah don't worry about what Harley tell you, I can put new pipes on without anything else, you just get a bit of popping decelerating, makes no difference to the bike, same with a air cleaner, put one on and you'll notice the difference in power but you don't need a fuel pack or whatever, that's bullshit." I asked about the power "minimal difference, you'd never notice".
    So...
Is this guy full of shit or are the dealers up selling like some kid in Maccas?
