HELMET EXPIRY DATE

Was talking to a local lad the other day and he was talking about a proposal by some governing body to introduce helmet expiry dates. Has anyone heard anything about this or is he full of shit?

Dont know the official source of his info so at the moment have regarded this as just an "out there" statement. If there was any credibility to this I thought it would have been in some sort of publication somewhere. Rodders is generally quick to pounce onto stuff like this and would be certain if this WAS a fact that he or others would be right onto it and posted a thread.

At present i'm thinking the dude that told me IS actually full of shit. Just thought i'd throw it out there.

Cant believe everything you hear ay? Best to do some research first before perpetuating a comment like this and making one-self sound like a dickhead also......cheers all

I've never heard anything, but suggestions - replace every 3 to 5 years.

Aren't they trying to remove red tape on this sort of thing right now? Why would they make it all more complex?

yeah sure fellas I totally agree with performing regular interior checks and compromising the integrity of the outer shell after an impact, it would be in the owners best interest to discard that helmet for sure without a doubt.
The problem I see is, like many riders I have a variety of helmets, half helmets- 3/4 helmets and a rather pricey full face helmet that I reckon ive worn twice in three years that is kept in a helmet sock in my cupboard. That helmet should still be of brand new condition or similar for many yrs to come if not being worn. Would be a real bastard if it would be considered non-compliant after a subscribed period. not to mention a waste of hard earned.
Anyhow like I said, the dude that told me this is probably only relaying what some other dickhead told over a few schooeys anyway. I just thought I'd run it by the rank and file here to see if anyone else had heard a similar thing. No harm in that....happy days men

It should be e a given that you replace your lid after a hit.
I've heard that if your standing with helmet in hand and with your arm straight by your side, that is roughly the height needed to be writeoff.

There is alot of talk on the net about replacing helmets every 3 to 5 years and some good reasons too.
But no legislation that I could find.

Another point , the helmet has to have the correct legal marking (whatever they are !) visible on the inside label.
If a helmet is well used, these marking usually are worn away fairly quickly, probably before 5 years anyway.

There's no helmet expiry date . Just like your undies when they get loose and don't fit your head then time to change.

Yeh I hope he don't wer his undies on his head that would be silly
I have a helmet fucked indicator o n two of my dirt bike helmets if the impact is to severe it turns red time to throw it out
I m sure there's no law about. Ten year old helmets but as been said if it's had a hard life get rid of it

Normally I would replace my helmet when the foam inside compresses and the helmet starts to get loose which is around 3yrs for me.

Then they get hung up in the garage.
