I know many of you are right up on this so.
I own a 2014 Dyna Wide Glide @ 8400 Ks .I am looking to the next step in performance. I ride mainly 1 up, touring and spirited riding, I don’t rev much above 4000 as the standard motor seems to run out of power after that. My rev range is usually from 2200 to about 4000.I do around 3 long trips each year and the rest is social riding and runs of a day or two. Long trips I might have some luggage and be 1 up , the over nighters I might have a combined weight of perhaps 160 kilos.( 2 people minimal gear)I don’t want a drag motor but would definitely like to clean the heads up and make it breath better and work a lot more efficiently.Im not sure if I need to rebore or go bigger pistons etc but lets for starters get your ideas on head work and go from there. I would like to use a RB Racing LSR 2 into 1 exhaust , a hi flow air cleaner and will get a TTS Master tune to tune it. I envisage approx a bit over 100 HP and about the same torque should be achievable. Reliability and useability is more important to me than outright dyno figures.
My idea was less than .600 valve lift possibly an S S 585 cam or Andrews 37 or 57 or equivalent cams. I would like to utilise roller rockers in the build if possible.
Am I on the right track? I have quotes from BranchOkeefe and also Dunnperformanceheads for heads or should I just take the bike to HD and fit a whineing sparrow stage 1V? ( was quoted over 5large)
Do I get cams to match the heads or heads to match a cam? Is my cams mentioned a good choice? Any one had experience with BranchOkeefe heads? I had Branch heads on my last wide glide .Also a good mate had an XR 1000 sporty back in the day and they came stock with heads from them So I sort of went for a familiar name to start.
Was going to make this a serious refit to last a while. Also looking for something different to what I see around.
Ill be planning this for around march or april as we get shitloads of rain here and not much riding is possible.perfect time for a refit
I know theres some seriously knowledgable people on here. Many thanks.
I'm no engine builder and not even qualified as a hack but I recently went through a similar thought process to you. If you have a builder in mind, chat to them about what you need (which isn't necessarily what you think you want). Otherwise you'll get a heap of opinions, confusion and perhaps mix matched parts. For example 585 cams like 10.5 compression and would benefit from headwork. Andrews 57 cams are 0.560 lift and would benefit less from headwork and they don't like compression above 10.1.
Lots of ways to skin a cat and spend your money.
I upgraded my top end from 96 to s&s 107 cylinders with matching cp forged pistons, 585 ezy start cams, s&s pushrods, fueling lifters. Engine is at 10.5 compression. No headwork or change to throttle body or injectors but it's an option down the track if I want more. No need for roller rockers or the like. The bike should give me exactly what you're after (useable midrange torque) and hopefully be pretty reliable. Still running the engine in on it's first couple hundred kms and doing some tts vtuning along the way. Since you're already at 103 ci, a cheaper and arguably more reliable option that will still give you a healthy increase in midrange torque is adding the andrews 57h cams and nothing else besides adjustable pushrods. If using an independent shop, this'd cost about $1k and you'd vtune it.
Hey Bucky...what sort of costs were involved in this build???
Hi daggs. Yeah im pretty happy so far. What exhaust and tuner are you running on yours? I've just got myself a supertrapp 2-1 pipe and will hopefully install over the weekend. Have you adjusted your spark timing as part of your tune?
Will also consider heads, throttle body and injectors down the track. What will you get?
