Strange Electrical Issue

    Hey all,

So half way through a ride today my Fat starts doing something stupid. When I hit an indicator (either side) both indicators flash on the dash, along with the red round light on the dash.  The Front indicators seem to match the side I hit, but the rear are dim, and the brake light flashes!!!

    Very Strang!

Obviously an electrical issue, but I thought I would ask if anyone has seen this before I start digging around for answers.

    Cheers

Mongrel have you plugged in your tts to see if it may have thrown a fault code?

I have seen the same issue on a couple of old commodores when the wiring looms were water damaged. Not too sure what may be the cause in this case but first thing id do is check the connections and wiring of all of the indictors and brake lights and the contacts. If you had any modification done to your wiring (internal wired bars, indicator relocation or aftermarket lights installed) that maybe the culprit if not correctly done.

Yeah- I reckon it's a cross/short somewhere. The bike has never seen water, so not that. I will just start from one indicator and methodically move along. I will find it.

I'd be checking the wiring around the back wheel area, could be the indicators and brake light have been chafed by the wheel and are all shorted.

Im banking its a bad earth somewhere.

Im sure youve seen car trailers with bad earths, they do the same sort of thing.

    So, I found the issue!!

It seems the rubber protective strip that holds the cable off the back wheel had let go.  Pics and explanation below...

So I noticed some black dusty suff where the wiring loom appears out begind the driver's seat.  Hmmm.... This don't look good.

So I lifted the guard and well, the pic speaks for itself.  The glue had let go and the cable had been rubbing on the wheel.

    OUCH!!

So All fixed, glued back up with epoxy, and added a bit more protection with some plastic cable cover.  Should be good now.

Electrical gremlins can be a pain to find.

Luckly yours was an obvious fault. Good find.
