Guys i am wanting to do some performance mods to get my '01 Heritage softail moving along a bit more smartly.
I have been given some advice by a local indy about doing a 95" build with SE 204 cams, new cam bearings, SE high volume oil pump and a Mikuni 42 carb.
This will come into just shy of $4,000. Or do I try and scource a 103B engine and slip some cams in it and maybe still stretch the budget to put on the Mikuni??
And with either of these options would i benefit from a different ignition/coil? Which brand? SE? S&S IST? Daytona twin tech?
Greatly appreciate any help peoples, especially from someone who has done work to a similar model Harley.
Thanks in advance.
$4K seems abit expensive just for what you are getting. Maybe I am out of touch with prices? Another option is 95", Andrews 37's CC heads to 82 & maybe go gear drives with your year bike. Will eliminate those shite cam chain tensioners. Proven reliable performance.
Done this a mates 06 Duece last year, (went roller chain with cam though, R series) he seems happy with it, especially coming from a stock 88"
As has been said too much money to spend just to go 103". Better off selling bike & buying a bike with 103"
Thanks for the feed back guys. I didn't know if i'd get a 103" that would fit.
The quote i have is as he put it "around $3800" so allowing for some unforseen stuff i rounded it to $4000. But he did say that I could stick with the standard carb and it would be less(about $500 less). He told me that i would get a couple more horses and much better throttle response with the Mik. But suprisingly he was not that concerned (for my build) about head work. He recons that the minimal gain i would get as opposed to the extra cost was not worth it.
I do get the feeling with this guy that if you dont agree with him you may as well take you bike else were.......... And he only talks about SE parts. Doesn't like to "mix and match" parts like S&S or Andrews in there too......
Maybe i should be talking to another work shop. I would like to do this in maybe Februrary or March next year and have already allowed the $4000 - $4500 for the build.
DynoHarley do you have your own shop?
What do you guys think?
Dyno I may have to seriously talk to you about you doing this build some time in the new year.
I am thinking if i bore my pots, install new pistons, maybe some S&S easy start cams with the better cam bearings, a high volume oil pump and a bit of head work. Keep the CV carb but jetted/tuned ofcourse.
I'd like a little more comp than standard but not to high either.
What do you think? could i get aroung 95hp and 100+ tq out of this combo.....
Or should i save a little longer and put a balanced stroker crank in my cases and do away with the counter weights??
Given that i'll have this bike for atleast the next 4 years before i even consider an upgrade. (maybe longer)
hi , 95 easy to do that rwhp , are you after high hp out put and or , nice torquey daily rider , 95'' are neat eng builds to do , comp ratio probally needs to be set around your rideing style and weight of bike and rider , pillion ,etc , i have removed balance weights out of my old soft tail 2006 - 106 cub s/s up grade and cave man build 134 rwhp , , but never seen any real gains other than increased vibration , splitting oil tank top mounts etc ,Mr hood mentioned this to me 6 years ago , and yep , it happened , the cv i have found to very good carby up to 95 rwhp , they were with mild builds but good pipes and port and valve work , so they may do bit better with more comp and cam etc , normal changes are lifters , and cam bearings , cam chain tensoners 2 of etc , if like send pm and can sort out build and cost , if not all good ,and happy hunting
Can't wait to get the engine sorted in the new year now!! Thanks for your advice Dyno and i look forward to meeting you.
And then taking my freshly rebuilt 95 for a run!!
